Hello, I have a clank when shifting. It usually happens when just starting out and the truck torques. I am thinking it is something loose underneath. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but has anyone ever had this problem?
Thanks
Think it might be the shifter cable hitting something underneath? My friend had an older truck that did that. Turned out his shifter cable (or something like that) was hitting his exhaust over and over.
Well, I'm trying to think of exactly what it was that was hitting, but I can't remember. But, every time he shifted 'hard' something underneath would bump the exhaust or transmission or something. I doubt this is what your problem is but you never know.
Pat,
your truck is a 5 speed, correct? If so, you have no shifter cable. The shifter goes straight in to the top of the transmission.
If you're hearing a "clunk" sound, the first thing I'd check is the universal joints.
Do this....Stop and shift into first and let out the clutch. Then press in the clutch and shift to reverse. Let out the clutch. Repeat a few times.
If you hear the clunk sound, it is probably driveline slack and from my experience the first place to look would be the universal joints.
The noise isn't the only new problem. The emergency brake decided to start sticking. I went to pull out of my drive and the back wheel was locked! I got it loose, but I need to fix it so it doesn't happen again.
wow it sounds like you got yourself a real winner huh? im sorry you are havin all these problems with it, you may need to just go over all the systems to be sure of proper operation and maybe spot a problem before it rears its ugly head...hopefully with maint. it will be ok, i wish you the best in fixing it cause it sounds like you really like the truck.
Thanks. I think once I get all the little things taken care of it will be fine. The garage put new brakes on the rear so I think they are probably to blame for the emergency brake. They won't admit to it, but I would bet any money because it didn't do that before.
yea pat ill bet thats it man they did just do it huh?? ill bet they were....ill tell u what when i had my M3 the tranny went out and i took it to Cottman trannys and they "fixed it" well i got it back and the shifter would hit the radio face...they tried to tell me that i bent it...what???!! i BENT IT?? its freakin billet aluminium how on earth did i bend it?? they claimed it was that way when it came in...well after taking it to my friend Paul's shop (he's an ASE master tech specilizing in high end euro cars) he said it was installed backwards and he showed me the procedure and sure enough it was....he also showed me their "rebuilt" tranny...they had used my same tranny AND the same factory parts it came with...a pin had simply pulled out of the shift linkage inside and made 3rd and 4th gear unusable...they simply replaced a pin (about $.50 according to him) and charged me $1375.00 real nice guys huh?? be sure you take your truck to a good guy who is honest...look around you'll find one thats my advice to you man take it from a guy who dropped $1375 into a tranny that needed a $.50 part.
