Bought new fan clutch. New feels a little tighter, maybe. Definitely controls temp better. Had A/C on and held temp steady at about 250 degrees in stop and go traffic. Major improvement, but not 100 percent. Went above L sitting and waiting at a drive thru. Turned off A/C and temp lowered to L. Never lowered just sitting at idle before.
Update:
New radiator, new fan clutch, 50/50 mix, 160 thermostat, new sending unit, gauge accuracy tested.
Radiator cap? Appears to hold pressure....I'm not boiling over.
Thermostat position? Should the spring side go in the block or in the bell housing?
Spring side said "Rad" I assumed that side toward the radiator.
Next step I guess...New water pump.
When I installed my thermostat I took notice how the old was installed and I put the new in the same way. The cone on the old one was in the housing and the body (there was no spring visible) in the block. So, I put the cone in the housing and the spring in the block. I figured that the the thermostat is inside the spring and it should be in the block to sense the heat in the block.
Yes, byronbges ir correct, the "button" should face toward the block. I would still do a new Water pump, you've already covered most of the rest of the cooling system.
Just wanted to post an update to my problem. I installed a mechanical temp. sensor near the thermastat and my temp stayed right around 180deg.(which is the last thermastat i installed in a desperate attempt to bring my temp down) but my dash gauge would still climb to the L or higher. I started to really think my dash gauge was shot so I just kept the mechanical one installed and used that. That was until last week. I had to take my manifold off and I went ahead and flushed it. Lo and behold a bunch of crud came out. It all made sense. I had a flow restriction in my manifold near my temp sending unit. So I really cleaned it out as best as I could and put a 195 thermastat back in.(fingers crossed) I reassembled everything .........and ........it worked. My gauge sit on N again maybe O with the a/c on on a warm day. I hope this can help someone. I know it drove me crazy for way too long
