What are engine operating temps?

Hello all--

what are normal operating temps for a 1992 460, measured at heater hose (after coolant exits t-stat)?

I just installed temps gauges for trans (at test port) and for engine (at heater hose between thermostat and heater core) so I donlt know what temps were before.

ambient temp this evening....75 degrees F
nothing being towed
no hill climbing
city driving
30 mins of driving

trans temp: 205-210 degrees

engine temp: 200 degrees

The engine coolant temp sounds dead on. The truck has a 195* thermostat so hovering at 200* is good. Trans temp seems a little high though. From my understanding 170-175* is ideal for the E4OD.

that's what I thought about the trans temp. I'm not sure though, as I have no reference point and could not find operating for engine or trans in my ford service manuals. I agree, the engine temps sounds right on.

What could be causing the high trans temps, if in fact they are high?

Recent trans service included....

4WD trans pan added (with drain plug)
4WD trans filter with trans retaining clip
Torque conv drained
refilled with Motorcraft Merc V fluid

I installed a temp gauge in my E4OD a couple years ago. I used the test-port and had to have the actual sensor a bit outside of the tranny case.

My tranny temp gauge reads 160-170 when the thing gets up to operating temperature. But, I will say that I have a secondary (factory) cooler on the transmission lines. I think this means the tranny temp is about 20* cooler than the radiator. This is all from my investigations using a point-and-shoot handheld temperature gauge that I bought at Harbor Freight.

See here

I might suspect that 200* for an E4OD might be normal if one does not have a secondary cooler (i.e. using only the cooler inside the radiator). I say that because mine has the secondary cooler, and it runs about 170*. I gotta suspect that without the secondary cooler, mine would run hotter. 20* - 30* hotter would not surprise me, as I seem to recall measuring about a 20* drop across the secondary cooler...
