Blue smoke indicates oil getting into the combustion chamber somehow. Sometimes it can run down through the valve guides if they are worn. Could also be for any of the reasons listed above. How many miles, and what kind of service has the truck seen?
I bought the truck with about 230k on the clock about a year ago. I really don't have a history on the truck, with the exception that it seemed to be taken care of mechanically. I have about 245k on the clock now. I do see drops of oil where I usually park the truck, but I am going through 3 qts / week - normal week = 300 miles or so.. The white / blue smoke goes away after a few seconds..
Yeah, 3 qts. in that few miles is excessive. I have 128,000 on mine and it hasn't used a half quart in the last 3,000 miles.
If the engine is getting oil in the combustion chambers while it is off, it is probably also getting in there while its running. I can't honestly say whether I would be overly concerned about it or not. Perhaps someone else with more knowledge of this subject will chime in.
