Unhappy Injector O ring replacement

I have been told by my mechanic that replacing the o rings on the injectors is a maintainance item that should be done every 75 k or so. He said that this is the reason I am using oil at the rate of less than 1000 miles per quart. He said that the 7.3 psd is virtually indestructible and that it is not in need of a overhaul at 83000 miles. I have no other symptons. It runs with full power and no great amount of smoke at startup. What do you think?

No need unless you are having problems w/ them. @ 83k she's just now getting broke-in!

I agree with your mechanic. That kind of oil consumption is usually the result of failing injector o-rings. Is your fuel filter black when you change it?

My filter was black when I changed it the other day... Not to mention I have some minor white smoke on startup and when idling for more than about 5 minutes... I take it this is a sign of bad o-rings... Well, should I just go ahead and replace them now while I have the turbo ripped off? It'd probably be easier anyway. Is this a good part to get from the stealership, or an aftermarket company?

Yes, that is a sign that the injector o-rings are failing.

What year truck is it? With 83K miles, it should be a warranty item.
