Inline 6 to V6????

Hi guys, a friend is having problems with his F150 1995, it's Inline 6 has a lot of wear and very low compression so he wants replace it, BUT... he has a newer F150 1999 with V6 engine with a big crash at rear so he ask me...

It's possible switch engines??? he wants remove off V6 and install on his F150 1995, I know there is a lot of work relative to Wiring harnes, accesorioes and so, but my main question is about performance, engine life, will be too much power OR too less???

Thanks for any comment...

The wiring will be the big problem, if you can handle it, it will work, though. The 96 and older truck was never designed to hold the 4.2L V6, but the engine compartment is generous, so it should fit. The question is, what is the truck used for? If he just cruises, the V6 will be fine. The V6 makes more horsepower than the inline six, but for sheer grunt, the inline six will blow it away. If he hauls alot, then fixing the inliner will be better than replacing it. My opinion is just repair the inliner, but I respect the fact that sometimes, you gotta make due with what you have. If money is tight, swapping the V6 might be the better option, if you have the wiring skills and some fabrication skills.

Does the V6 use the old bellhousing pattern? That's the most important thing.

In any case, I think by the time you added up all the odds and ends it would take to install a craptastic little engine, not to mention the value of your time, you would be better off rebuilding the 300. If the bores and crank journals aren't worn out of spec, you can get a simple rings/bearings rebuild kit for just a couple of hundred bucks, and if your friend has the skills to do that engine swap, he could certainly rebuild a 300.

the 4.2 is based off the 3.8 and ford did drop the 3.8 in the early 80s effies...i dont know what bell housing bolt pattern it uses tho. id say rebuild or get a rebuilt engine...not worth it IMO...sell the v-6 and use the $$ for a 300

I think the swap can be done reletively easy if you swap out the whole drive train wireing harness and ect. I would say it would be very hard to make a 99 engine run with the 95 non ob2 computer harness. Fab work would be miminal realy motor mounts and relocate the trans mount/cross member. I think the radatior would work for you as long as you used electric fans since the fan on a V6 wont work due to the distance from the shroud.

I thought the 3.8 shared the 302 bellhousing? That the Essex 3.8 block was a 302 with its butt chopped off and different bore/stroke, etc. If so, then the 3.8 would have the SBF bolt pattern.

3.8/4.2 are interchangable...don't mind me referring to it as a 3.8.

Well, thanks guys for your comments, it's an interesting topic...

I know what the I6 can do and what the V6 can do, that truck is main used for field service, so is crusing most of the time...

I have skill for any wiring harness and also to rebuilt I6 but there are some other considerations for my friend like total time, V6 is available and so...

I guess there is no problem on bellhousing, because my friend says he saw some V6 coupled to E4OD wich is the actual tranny at F150 1995

Any extra comments will help....

You'll only be able to do the swap if the 95 has a manual trans.

A V-6 auto computer is set up to run a 4R70W(AODE) and a I-6 4.9L electronic auto computer will only run an E4OD Later known as 4R100
