In my early teen years I remember seeing a Ford SUV that was approximately the same size and passenger capacity as a suburban. It was not a custom, and it was not a crewcab SRW with a cap. Does anybody remember the year they made this truck and what it was called?
Right now I'm in an argument with a friend who says the first SUV of suburban size ford ever made was the Expedition or Excursion.
There is one here in town. So I can say that they exist. There was a company custom building them in the late 80's and early 90's based on the crew cab trucks, which they cut and spliced a bronco cap on. So...built by Ford...only sort of.
I don't remember for sure what they called them. Memory says it was a "western" sounding name.
Next time I spot it, I'll try to remember to look.
Centurion made a four door Bronco conversion, used to be one here in town. Always got a double take from me. I don't recall Ford making a 4 door SUV then though,.
I remember the Centurions. The ones I saw were based on the F350 crewcab with shortened frame and Bronco backend grafted on. I always wondered why it took Ford 35 years to come up with an answer the Suburban (the Excursion) and why Dodge never did come up with anything to compete with Suburban either. International was the only one that tried, with the Travelall.
