I own a 2000 F-150 extended cab with 115,000 KM on the clock in March my left front tie rod end broke and punched a hole through the inside of the wheel, last week it happened again to the right front wheel, bad enough I had to replace both tie rod ends, but Ford wants $300 each to replace the aluminum wheels, I say enough is enough, what kind of junk has ford used in the front ends of these trucks, I understand that a recall has been issued, however owners are on their own as far as repairs. Has this happened to anyone else, I'd like to know.
It's not an uncommon problem however if the truck is serviced regularly, and the tie rod ends checked at each service like they should be, any problems should be caught before they actually fall apart. Any play in these tie rod ends is too much. If they move back and forth or you can push the joint in and out or up and down they need to be replaced.
Raceguy: Maybe my mistake was buying this truck second hand with 109,000 KM it has now become obvious that the tie rod ends were never serviced by first owner, even so they come from the factory with no greese fittings, I had truck in for service today and new tie rod ends, left one from Ford right one is Moog and I was told "no they can't be greesed" now in the past two weeks I have found out about the "recall" at owners expense. Ford is now sending out bullitens to owners of 97-2003 F-150's to have tie rod ends checked every 20,000KM. The local Ford dealer who did my left tie rod in March checked the right side and told me it was good and tight with no play. so I don't know what I did wrong. This is my 3rd. F-150 since 1984 and until now I have never had a problem with tie rod ends, mind you I have never thought much of Ford ball joints, which seem to wear out and need replacing early in life. Any thoughts from other owners.
Have a 99 F150, 4X4, with 116,00 miles, have replaced both tie rods, at around 90,000 miles. New ones have grease fittings of course. However, one of the new ones I had to replace already cause it was loose, under warranty. Some aftermarket tierods come with a life time warranty, so that helps. Ball joints and tie rods need to be checked regularly.
i just bought a 2000 f-150 extended cab 4x4 so on and it had 41,000 miles on it and in two weeks the tie rod just came apart! the ball came right out of the pocket! good thing i was only in my drive way. i was not very happy cause it didnt have many miles on it and it should not have passed inspection like that. good thing it was under waranty. i had them replace ball joints tie rods and anyother bearing up there. and the new tie rods they put on still dont have grease fittings. i guess they just want you to keep buying new ones instead of greasing them.
I was told by service tech when I went in for oil and greese last week that my 2 new tie rod ends have no greese fittings. When my left side went, the local Ford dealer told me "I checked the right tie rod end and it is tight and nothing wrong, 2 monthe later it breaks, it looks to me like it just poped out of the rubber socket. I am wondering if anybody else lost a wheel in the process of the tie rod end breaking and punching a hole through the wheel?
