Hello. Im new to these forums and to F-150 ownership. Ive got an 03 f-150 with 4.6, Its got a slew of problems, none of which the dealership can find (cant duplicate problem). The most annoying is this one. From time to time, the truck will create a short grinding sounds when you begin accellerating after a stop. Also, it will create the same grinding sound from time to time when you begin accelerating after a turn. The grinding sounds JUST like you drove over a cattle guard. Can someone give me an idea as to what could be doing this? The transmission has been checked by ford twice and i just got the fluid flushed out of the tranny and they said it looked fine.
Hi and welcome to the forum
Does your truck have a limited slip rear diff?
Chattering clutches when taking off around a corner is quite common and can usually be cured by changing the oil in the diff and adding a bottle of friction modifier.
Is it more like a shutter than a grind.? If it is it may be the tranny T/C shutter other year trucks have it and this problem you are having sound just like it. What other issues are you having.
hi thanks for the replies! well.. im sort of aloof about vehicle parts... im not sure if it has a rear slip differential... not sure what the differences are. I do know that the pinon gears in the back were replaced because they were making a whining sound (which was remedied but theyve started doing it again). And the sound is not really a shutter.. its a grind... it sounds and feels exactly like you drove over a cattle guard... i mean just like that. I appreciate the input. How do i find out the rear differential thing?
well... the other issues im having are these: The AC makes a groaning sound when you turn it on.... also, every now and then when im parked at a stoplight, the idle will slow down for a second and then come back. The other issue is when you start the truck after having driven it a while and its warm, sometimes it will make this wierd knock sound for a second while the key is being turned. Its the same sound an engine would make if it slowed down to the point of dying. I dont know how to explain it very well... I know squat about the internal functioning of cars... forgive my wierd descriptions
Take a look at the VIN tag on the door post and let us know what the axle code is. From that it is possible to tell if it has limited slip.
How long does the A/C make the nosie for? If it is just for a split second when you turn it on it's probably a normal noise.
When you're stopped at a stop sign sometimes the idle will dip momentarily when the A/C compressor kicks in. The IAC (Idle Air Control) takes care of this so the idle should always be the same but sometimes the IAC cant react quite quick enough so you notice a little dip in the idle speed. If it only happens real quickly it's nothing to worry about.
Hey thanks again for the quick reply! Im gonna get that vin number in the morning before i head out for work (goin to bed right now). As far as the AC, it actually makes the sound for a prolonged period. Basically when you turn it on, it makes this groaning sound and obviously when i accelerate the groaning sound is heightened. It does reduce the intensity as the truck gets going but is still there. Im thinkin its due a new AC soon which is a bummer cause its a year old. Im takin it in to drive it with a foreman at the ford dealership tomorrow who is gonna listen for the grinding sound and take a look at the pinon gears again to find out why they keep makin this funky whining sound. Man my poor truck.. always driven fords but ive never had one that just fell to pieces so quick.. anyway... i appreciate all the input i can get. Thanks for the continued replies.
Sounds like the problems I am having on my 03 as well, The dealer had to load up the yoke assembly with grease, The problem sounded like "power braking noise" to me, Ford has a SSB out on a 2-3 shift problem that states this is a normal shifting characteristics on this vechicle.
