I bought this 1994 f150 4x4 and was checking the front end and there seem to be a little movement there, but it doesn't appear to be balljoints, it seems like the movement is in the hub like the wheel bearings are a not tight enough, the tires were wearing on the out sides, if this is true would that ruin the wheel bearings? If it's been like that for a while should I put new bearings in or just tighten them up? any advice? anyone thanks Randy
bearings and seals are about $35 per side ---it won't hurt to replace them. Jack the truck up and hold wheel at top and bottom and shake--watch joints for movement, if not its bearings, 1994 probably on original set of bearings. outside tire wear indicates out of alignment for sure--get one and the shop will tell you if the joints are shot.
could need just alignment and bearings tightened.

Thanks, if I replace the bearings, is their any advice on putting the bearing race in, I keep thinking your suppose to tap one edge with a centre punch, or am I way off there, any advice will sure help thanks Randy
used a screw driver on mine. beat them out backward, pushed them in using the old bearing to beat on. get the race started, lay the old bearing in-there and use a 2x4 or LARGE socket to beat on. make sure the race is flush (bottomed out). use fingernail to check that they are absolutly flush. (any crookedness results in loose bearings and bad tire wear) reassemble using a good bearing grease. the bearings need a good amount, the hub (rotor & hub) not much and the locking hub a light coat. look at the spec for torque, should be around 25-40? go on the light side but enough to get the keeper in place. you may have to play with it a little (25 and the keeper is almost lined-up...a little more, there its 28-29--keeper fits its GOOD!)
hope this helps, i've done this lots to mine, 1st rotors,2nd hub,3rd seals,4th premium lock hubs......can do it now in my sleep.
Randy
Removal of the races is with a center punch or chisel from the back side of the race. You will probably destroy the race removing it, they are very brittle. Installation must be even using a bearing installation tool or a large socket that allows tapping the race in the hub evenly.
Tires wearing on the outside edge are usually too much toe-in. Have alignment checked soon.

I've always pressed the races in and out... well.. hammered them out with a brass punch and back in with a large socket. I've never had to score the races, as they hold themselves in pretty good. I did have score the rear seal every 90 degrees or so.. so the dumb thing would stay tight in there.

I always buy TIMKEN bearings, Spicer u-joints, and Crown in the purple sack! As for the hub nut socket, well I'm just not sure. I'm figurin all the D44's use the same nut so I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I took it to a wheel alignment place, they checked the front end and said it was really tight, I told him I thought the wheel bearings where alittle loose, he said if you check for play in the wheel bearing you will get some. if your checking them when there cold, which is what I did. as soon as they warm up they tighten up, when he checked mine after I drove like 10 miles to get there, they where tight, thats something I didn't know, they did the wheel alignment and the toe in was really out of wack, all is well in the front end department for know, I'm going to do rotors and brakes in the next couple of months, so I might do new bearings then, so thanks for the help, I'll save the post for reference when I do the bearings
