'96 XLT 4.0L, 145,000 miles
Check engine light on; AutoZone got codes of 401 & 420. Yesterday, truck very hard to start cold w/o giving gas and would not idle. (like no choke at all) Ran rough & would die w/o foot on gas. Drove 20 miles to work in this condition (highway), then same thing after work when started. After driving in town and 3 stops at auto stores, I accelerated hard when taking off out of a parking lot. Truck started running fine then, idled for about 10 mins during a wash, then drove fine 20 miles home. Started/ran fine today.
Any idea where to start?? Figure a sensor or something is going out, but what?
Thanks-
I am having the same problem. I have a 96 exploder 116000 miles. I have a code 0401 and I have changed the EGR, and the Control solonid, and gone over the entire EGR circuit. The car seems to satrt ok but I have been having this check engine code for months now.
Try cleaning your MAF and IAC with 02 safe carb cleaner. Make sure you DO NOT direct the stream from the carb cleaner right at the MAF filiments... they are similer to light bulb filaments and will break. Just give them a good coating and then let the MAF dry. Disconnect your battery while doing this and then reconnect it after you are finished. Take a 30 min drive at varying speeds to reset your ECU. Good luck.
