Just replaced the torque converter seal on a '91 Ranger w/100K+ miles. When the trans is cold, there is no fluid loss, but after about 20 minutes on the highway, it starts dumping fluid. This is the reason the seal was replaced. Was there an issue with the pump on teh A4OD?
Ive been turning wrencehes for almost 20 years, but I'm not a tranny tech. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
does it continue to leak after you stop? if it does check your dipstick tube, on my 89, it came in 2 peices and in the rebuild it was put back together without the O-ring and was leaking. i musta taken it back to the shop 6 times before my dad and i finally crawled under and did it ourselves. im not sure if yours is the same, what size motor did you get?
Check the hub on the converter for grooves/polish. The bushing in the pump may be worn out, allowing too much 'gush' for the seal to handle. Did you align the pump when you reassembled it? I used the hub on the backside of the pump to do the alignment on the one I did. The A4LD is noted for leaking after a 'long hot run', though it will be dry around town. Just too much play in the hub/pump bushing, too much for for the seal, or a groove in the hub allowing 'just a little too much fluid' to hit the backside of the seal for it to handle.
If you don't have one, I'd add a trans cooler to keep the temp down. That may be enough to stop the leakage. Even if you already have one, if it is not a big one, adding a larger one may help avoid the drooling. You can add one in series with the radiator cooler if you desire.
