96 Explorer - 12mpg "OUCH"

Hi Guys,

Just bought a 96 Explorer (109K miles) with the 4.0 V6 and Automatic 4x4, and the first tank came out to a very poor 12mpg. Thats driving 65-75mph. We really like the way it drives and seams to handle good. I bought a K&N air filter for it the day after I bought it.
Today I bought new Autolight double platinum Spark Plugs and plug wires for it today.
Any ideas on how to improve the mpg are very welcome.

Thanks!
Larry

If you bought a K&N filter, maybe it's how you drive. Check the temperature gauge. If it isn't running almost mid scale, the engine is running cold and the computer is selecting a richer gas mixture. Thermostat failure is a common problem in Explorers.

Actually the temperature is about 1/8" from the HOT side.
As if it runs warm???

And I really don't floor it, 65 - 75.
Up here in Montana everyone drives 75mph or faster....

I'm going to look at the egr valve and see if its clogged tonight.

Thanks!

Larry
