Thanks for the advice Rockledge. In this case I know that the maf and pcm are stock - I've replaced both of those parts. My concern is that this truck has the duraetch engine in it. I know I have the flex fuel pump and regulator - I know that I have the flex fuel sparks. I will soon have the flex fuel injectors. Still not sure if there is any difference in the heads between a duratech and flex fuel. I'll let you know when I find out. Hey - By the way how does one get upgraded from freshman user on this sight?

You don't have the Duratec engine in there, that engine is a DOHC design that has never been an option on the Ranger, and doesn't even bolt up.

Glad to hear you are making progress on this.

Hey Scotty, sounds like you've found a Tech that knows his stuff, better cultivate him.

If he puts the fix on this ride I'd take him out to lunch, pick his brains while feeding him the bigest steak he could eat lol.

Yah as Rockledge said, sounds like somone has been fooling around with this ride that didn't fully understand what he was doing. Makes you wonder what else may have been messed with doesn't it.

Even if the chip hasn't been changed, would be nice if you knew if the stock chip has been fooled with & if the program in there is the correct one for this engine.

Keep us posted on this one, it reads better than a soap opera & has more twists & turns than a WVa country road. lol

I'm not familar with the duratech but I would be VERY surprised if it had 60 injectors. What color are they, I'll see if I can track down the spec from Ford.

Don't know Ken00 - The mechanic that finally found the problem didn't specifically say what color they are. He did indicate that they he had researched - and that the injectors that were in the truck were designed for 30 pounds. I thought that the duratech injectors expected that pressure. Do some of the older Fords with external regulators spray at 30 pounds? - I just hope that this fixes the problem! Thanks for the post.

I have a 99 xlt 3.0 flex fuel 5 speed 2wd 83000 miles. I had the same problem it would stutter and stall and have no power at all but didn't throw any kind of code. I am no mechanic and no nothing of vehicles but my buddy is good with cars we did a fpt and it read at like 60 we couldn't figure out what was wrong it was getting fuel so I took it to midas to get a diagnostics check (bad mistake) they told me that the catalytic converters were clogged and pushing exhaust back up into the motor (seemed reasonable) they quoted me $1200 to fix it and said the reason for the cost is because that there isn't a universal converter and they would have to get it from Ford. So i took it to a mechanic to see if he could figure out what was up and right away he said I had a clogged injector on #4 and #3 and that the #5 plug wire was on the exhaust manifold and got burnt (i put new plugs and wires on 4000 miles ago, should have double checked everything) he put V8 injectors in place of the bad injectors and changed the plug wire and presto it actually ran better not as good as it should have but enough to get her home. I just recently changed all of the injectors and she runs better than when i got her. Thank god I didn't have midas replace the cats that wouldn't have even fixed the problem! It was pretty easy to change the injectors but $73 per injector ouch!!! I am going to change the fuel filter tomorrow after work. I hope you get yours back up and running

Thanks Slur79 for the post. I was tempted to look at the fuel injectors when I was trying to get mine back in shape - However I had been troubleshooting for a while at that point and decided to give it to someone with more experience and maybe some better tools than I have. I could have saved alot of money doing it myself - however - since Metro Ford found the problem I'll let them earn there dime.

Let me just clarify something, the injectors are rated by flow rate and the amount of fuel they deliver is control by the PCM by changing the pulse (the time they are squirting fuel), fuel pressure is measured in PSI. A 1999 3.0, std or FF should have 60 psi of fuel pressure. A 3.0 FF will have B/G injectors rated at 25.3, std 3.0 has gray injectors rated at 14. The FF has the 25.3 because they need to deliver more if your running E-85.
