Rear End Clunk??
I hooked up yesterday afternoon, checked the rollback...3' exactly. It has always done that; never know an automatic that does not. However, I always use the E brake and never allow it to rock in the park mode.
clunk I wanted to discover the problem and contacted
many people who had the same issue. My truck has been
to the dealer more tha 4 times for this in excess of
15 days total. I discovered someone who got the issue
fixed finally and brought the issue to Ford who denied
service because it involves pulling the tranny and
adjusting the low reverse clutch. The symptoms are all
the same back out put in drive and clunk within 5 to
10 ft after take off can only be duplicated once truck
is shut down for a while. Sometimes it does and
sometimes it does not. If this is your problem then
copy this post take it to your dealer. Try to get them
to repair the problem if they wont repair it then
demand an extra warranty and tell them if the clunk
will not cause any damage and is a charachteristic of
the vehicle then stand behind it with a warranty. If
you do not get satisfaction from the service dept go
to the Customer Relations Manager and formally
complain. I did this and got an extended warranty to
75000 miles. Go big and look at the warrantys and tell
them what you want and dont let them make you pay a
deductible. After I found the problem I took
everything into Ford and passed on the information to
the service dept they called FORD HOTLINE and sure
enough this was it I have it in writing from FORD
admitting to the problem of the reverse clutch but
denied the service saying it was a charachteristic of
the vehicle. GOOD LUCK getting this fixed I only know
of one person who got it remedied and below are quotes
from him and the other info from the engineers and
service techs who did the right thing and fixed the
clunk. Take it to the dealer and demand it get fixed
maybe it will get the rest of us poor souls a fix.
Stay on the trail and you will get at least an
extended warranty. Please feel free to print this and
use it for reference its your first step to getting
satisfaction for your 40,000 dollar purchase. SEE
BELOW! Please post what the outcome is for everyones
benefit.
When the dealership Svc Director explained it to me it
made perfect since.. The clutch pack is made up of a
shaft spline and a clutch disk that has splines in it
as well. When the clutch get the VSS signal, that is a
result of getting a "DSS" signal from a sensor in the
rear-end which detects that the vehicle is moving it
triggers the Clutch pack to lock up. The clutch is
locking up everytime, but we don't often feel it or
hear it because if the shaft spline and the clutch
disk splines are aligned when it occurs, the
engagement happens smoothly, but if the splines are
not aligned, the clutch will turn until the splines
engages ( or lock) with the splines on the shaft. this
is what causes the clunk and explains why the noise in
intermindent because we never know at what point the
spines are aligned or not. When they adjusted my
clutch pack, it seemed to help or maybe even fixed it
because I haven't heard it since i picked it up, but
I'm told that there will be a new flash soon that will
either keep the clutch pack engaged or not engage it
all thus eliminating the clunk all together

>8). The clearances on the low-reverse clutch which
may not be adjusted
correctly.. There about to check this out tomorrow,
but unfortunally
there going to have to remove the transmission to
check it out which it
was there going to do tomorrow.
The trans was pulled out today, The low-reverse clutch
clearances were
found to be way out of spec's after they consulted
with the engineering
team @ Ford who builds the Torqshift trans. They have
ordered a new
snap ring, and some other parts that are due to be in
tomorrow. Then they
will reassemble the trans and re-install it with new
gaskets, seals,
etc
Update: I picked up the truck this afternoon, seems to
be running fine.
no clunks yet and is shifting much better... they
washed it and cleaned
it up real nice.

I'm told that that replacing the part will help a lot,
but that the
real issue is that ( and I'll try to explain it like
the Engineer and Svc
Director told me was that the "VSS" was signaling that
trans @ "L1" to
lock up the low-Rev clutch what causes the problem, He
told me that
ford is working on a new flash to prevent this from
occurring.
