Front Drive Clunking Noise

The past couple weeks I have been getting this clunking noise from my front end driver area. Took the wheel off today to find that the hub was completely trashed. Replaced the hub but I am still getting a clunking noise. And I don't need to be accelerating, could be just idling forward slowly and the noise with still happen. I went back underneath and noticed some play with the CV axle going in and out of the hub. Could that be the source of the issue. Passenger side has no play at all.

use Search

I've learned that it is always helpful to Search the Forum for your issue using key words...rather than start a new thread...there is a ton of info on this subject.

Go to your specific truck Forum, then on the right side of the header, click Search This Forum, type in key words or phrase. Works well...

Start with this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...bar-links.html

Good luck.

There should be no play what-so-ever. Do you remember tightening the axle nut?

I know the axle nut is as tight as possible. I did notice that some metal broke off from the axle right underneath the threads going into the hub. I am guessing this would allow for the play I am getting. But what I am wondering is if that can cause the clunking I am hearing.

Based on your video...to me it sounds like an axle noise. Did your axle nut originally have a washer behind it that you might have overlooked during the reinstall?

So, I was able to put my truck up on a lift at work. I noticed with the front propeller shaft, at the rear u-joint, there is a ton of play. I am not sure if that is supposed to be play there. And also a new noise started after I changed the hub and axle. It sounds like a metal hitting metal but only happens while in 2wd. If I switch to 4wd (only going straight) the noise goes away. Any suggestions.

I believe that the 1177 part might have fallen out when I put the new axle in, could that be the source of the issue?

There is not supposed to be any play in the u-joints, time to replace it.

The metal to metal noise, is it a scraping noise, banging noise, or a clanking noise?

Check the backing plate behind the rotor to make sure it didn't get bent in towards the rotor.

Since you know they're bad, start by replacing the front u-joints and see if the noise goes away.
