Rear End Clunk??

I just picked up a 2004 F350. 04 motor. I noticed the clunking noise in the rearend that I have read about on this site. Here is when I notice it... After vehicle has sat for 15+ minutes, I back out of my driveway, put vehicle in drive, let my foot off the brake and vehicle begins moving forward due to idle...and then I put my foot on the gas pedal and clunk. At first I thought it was something in the driveline but I know the slack has been taken up because I'm already being moved forward. I've read lots about this on this site, but I was curious if anybody had found out what it actually was yet??

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
i got the same thing with my 2004 i noticed comming out the drive way and then when i start moving to the left i hear a clunck. mine sounds more like its comming from the front though since i can feel it in the floor under my feet. maybe its there but i have it also. it is also obvious at times when stoped like at a stop sign and then make a left hand turn. like turning the wheel while under power. i dont seem to ever hear it when going right.. weird?? mine is also a 2004 build is 10/03 PSD 4x4 CC. if anyone has any suggestions they would be great thanks.

I have an early 03 and it does the same thing. Do a search on clunk and you will have many references to read.

Thanks for the tip. I have done lots of reading on here about the clunk...but I haven't seen where anybody came up with a definite solution - lots of theories but nothing that has worked for everybody. My noise definitely sounds like its coming from the rear.

1/03 build..

Clunk on 'lite' accell. away from driveway, after backing.. Also.. will clunk after a short sit time on a straight pull as well.. Mine also will sometimes do it a couple of times (only) on warm up between the 2-3 upshift.. Slight 'flare' in the 2-3 shift, that seems to enhance the condition.. Mine is definetly from mid ship, or posible front end.. Not rear end related.. Seems to be a clunk with a twisting/bind sensation that feels as if the truck is 'bumped' from the front/side.. And felt through the floor also.. Ford has 'finally' felt it, and documented the issue/complaint.. They were supposed to contact Ford Engineering for advice/repair.. They must have heard of the complaint and are aware by now.. Haven't heard back yet.. Have heard of others that have had the auto hubs repalced with no fix.. Also heard it was trans related, but really seems to have a right/left 'pop' that jerks the truck to the side.. Unlike a trans condition...Sound familiar??

wolffee...

Yep.... 4x4, S/C, no lift, only mods are Predator and EGT gauge.. Being that the clunk can/will occur pulling from just a straight line, would lead me to believe that its not a limited slip/clutch pack issue as has happened in the past.. And I can 'really' feel it (at most times) through my feet/floor/steering.. I know in the past we had some issues in our fleet with the cross members not being tight enough and would 'pop' with the stress of a launch, or body movement/racking.. My tranny has been out 3 times already (rear main), so I think that it would of been 'caught' if that were the issue.. Plus,, it isn't a constant occurance.. Sometimes I'll be waiting for it and.........nothing.........Guess I'll have to have the 'wife' duct tape me to the running boards with my 'chassis ear' on to get a better perspective!!!

I have a 4/02/03 build, 4x4 SC torqshift with 3.73 LS diff and same clunk as what you describe. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't.

i will have to check into the cross members as a place to start. its just like you say when you look for it its not there.. i do hear it more i THINK with the AC on but i know i have heard it like once or twice with it off so i dont know. I am lucky i havent had a rear main seal problom. mine is clean as a bell. i havent had any work done repair wise so i dont know. i am going to my diesel mechanic tomorrow to look at some options for exhaust while im there i am going to have him take a look and see if he has any ideas about the sound. i will post what i can from what he says or opinions. see what happens

(BD10/03 built PSD sc 4x4 automatic) I have the same clunk. Sometimes turning left but, 100% of the time I hear the clunk and feel in on the floor at the 2nd to 3rd shift. I have been in twice and no results they tightened every bolt and all that did was cause other noises from the overtorque. I also have a bind in the shifter after driving in reverse the moving into park.

It happens with mine after sitting parked for a while (15-20 mins). Back out of parking place and start rolling forward. Sometimes loud sometimes not at all. When I first took it in, they couldn't reproduce it. Second time they said it was the parking brake releasing it's shoes. I quit using the parking brake. It still does it.

BULL.....

If that were the case than 'every' PSD/owner would have the exact, or very simular 'clunk', noises... Most don't.. I had been taking mine in for other issues, and 'made them aware to check' each time until they finally heard/felt it... In reality, they probably on checked/tested it a few times.. So it's now documented.. My concern is this...In my 30+ years of wrenching, anything that bangs, clunks, hammers ect. 'usually' ends up with a failed component and/or a related repair at 'some' point.. Hope I'm wrong, but after the 3/36 is gone, there will be a paper trail back to the original complaint.. A clunk, dropping into gear is one thing... 'Banging' throughout a gear change, or a binding clunk/pop when underway is something else.. I have three freinds that own 04's, and NONE of them have the complaint.. Not to mention our PSD fleet...

So what are you suggesting we do. FMC obviously knows about it and its documented and they arent fixing yours are they? So are you trying for a lemon law. what can you do?

You complaint is documented. In most cases the "Problem not found" goes on the record.
