I have a 1995 Bronco. The window switch on the passenger door began only working occasionally. I could still control it with the driver's control switch so I was in no hurry to fix it. After about a month the driver side switch beagn doing the same thing. What initially looked like it would be an easy fix by replacing the passenger switch now has me scratching my head. Why would one switch slowly fail while the other worked for awhile then followed suit?
does the switch to your driver side window still work? or is it just the passenger side using the switches from the driver/passenger side? have you removed the door panel?? maybe your motor is grounding... does it trip the breaker?? if it does trip the breaker... you should be able to hear it ( its very faint) that would mean your motor is seized or drawing too much current... grounding out. if not... maybe the switches wore out as a combo??? it could happen....
You do have a wierd prob. But one thing to keep in mind, the passenger side is the "Master: side for both the windows and the locks. Best to get a wiring diagram from a Chilton or Haynes manual and start tracing the wiring.
Thansk guys for the input. BillyBo you state the "passenger side is the Master for both windows". I thought the driver side would be the master, but then looking at the wiring diagram I see the driver switch is wired through the passenger switch.
I think I need someone to explain the wiring diagram then I can trace the power.
Power goes to the passenger switch, then to the drivers side, but if I remember correctly, the ground from the drivers side is fed to the passenger side but only when the switch is in use. Your best bet is to just start checking at the passenger side, and at every point a contact is made, check for power or continuity. I had to trace mine and after going through all the passenger side, I went to the drivers side and found a broken wire in the harness there. After a little more snooping, it was a ground that was needed to allow the passenger side to work. There is a harness connection behind the kick panel for each door. That will give you another point to check.
I FIXED IT !!! It was the switch on the driver's side. FYI for those who experience switch problems in their Broncos; both the passenger side switches and the driver's side switches are the same. The driver side lists for $50.00 and the passenger side for $16.00, so save money. Either will work in either position and that includes the lock switches. They are all the same. The only difference between the lock and window switches is the symbol thats painted on them.
I wish mine was that easy. I replaced em both...thank god I bought a passenger side switch first, then found they were the same so I bought another and replaced the drivers side...but still nothing. Till I traced the wires down.....
Good job!
I've replaced both pass. & driver's window switches in the last year. The first was from Ford @ $30. Second was from generic "Help!" isle @ Pep Boys @ $9.95. Both worked the same. Didn't realize the lock switch was the exact same, or would've bought generic Help! there also, instead of $38. from Ford. Oh well....
