Angry Choke spring?

Hi guys.
I have an 86 f150, 300-6 with the original carter 1bbl carb. I've been having problems with the automatic choke. I've adjusted it cold to where it's closed on startup. However, after the engine's warm, I'll slow down to a stop and the engine will run rough, rich, and eventually flood itself out. After that I've got to turn the choke to open (it's still closed on a hot engine) in order to get it to start once again. That wasn't fun on that hot iron without a pair of gloves.

So I'm coming to the experts, what could be wrong with my choke? I want to say it's the spring inside the choke actuator since I believe that as the engine warms up, so does that spring and it opens the choke up. But I'm also a carb idiot, being a kid having grown up on the wonders of fuel injection. So I'm open to suggestions. Ask me if you want me to check anything. Right now I've just got that choke open and it takes forever to start it up, plus all the problems that come with leaving that little guy hanging.

So I'll take all ideas and don't be afraid to ask if you need any more info.

Thanks,
Greg

Many moons ago when my 67 Dart wouldnt start because of a stuck automatic choke I simply replaced it with a manual choke kit from Pep Boys. Problem solved.

Could be a bad spring. Is it an electric choke or hot air.

It could be set too tight. You do want tension in it in the morning, but not so much that it can never open. You could lean it out little by little...lean it a notch, live with it for the day, if it's no good, try again the next morning. A good way to set your choke is in the morning (when the motor's cold), rotate it rich until the choke is closed tight, then lean until the plate barely opens, then rich again til it pops shut. Also verify you have proper pulldown clearance.

Hopefully you just need to lean the choke a bit. In my opinion new springs are overpriced.
