One a 2000 Ranger 2 wheel drive with a 4 litre auto
The other a 98 F150 2 wheel drive with a 4.6 auto
I want to tow a 17.5 foot fishing boat short distances mainly, (boat motor and trailer weigh about 1800 lbs) and drive back and forth to work about 25 miles.
How much better fuel economy could I expect with the Ranger if any.
How common is the intake gasket and head problem on the 4 litre.
Would you pay for an extended waranty on the 4 litre or for that matter the 4.6
I think my vote would go with the F150,there have been a few times when I was towing one of my boats and regreted not having more truck. And I have had to pull a friend with his toyote and boat and trailer up out of the water because the ramp was too steep. That and expressway driving while towing would definitly put me in the bigger truck.
Go with the F150. Mileage may not be quite as high as the Ranger but when you're planning to haul something the last thing you want is to be stuck with an underpowered vehicle. There's nothing worse!
When you're towing, stability is key. Go for the F150.
That said, I pull a 800 pound travel trailer with my Ranger 3.0. But it isn't all that often. My wife's Tracker could pull it too, but with her short wheelbase, it would make for a really scary ride. Needless to say, her car doesn't have a tow hitch.
Thanks guys this was the way I was leaning but being a cheapskate fuel economy always concerns me. The other thing was for roughly the same money the Ranger is 2 years newer and has 30,000 fewer kilometers ( thats not spelled right but my brain is locked in park)
Thanks again
Frank
