I am working on a project to get the goats of bowtie bubbas in my city. I have a 1987 S-10. It has the old 4 banger, and runs fine, for a Chevy, but not good enough. I have had Fords all of my life, and since this truck was free (long story), I feel comfortable changing this truck for the better. What I have planned is fairly odd. First I am installing seats from a 2001 Ford E150 Van. They are the rear buckets, and I have them halfway installed already. Next comes the real kicker. I have a 3.8 and c4 from a T-bird. With a little wiring and fabrication, I plan to have it live again. When that is done, I am going to decal "Powered by Ford" on the windshield, and paint a nice pretty blue oval on the tailgate. Other then that, I want to remove the old s10 emblems. I think I might call this truck an F10 when I am done. I cant wait to see how many people I give whiplash. I already had a friend (Chevy guy) offer to pay me NOT to do it, so I know I will get the reaction I want.
If anybody has any ideas or input, please feel free to jump in.
It will be a switch to put a Ford into a chevy, hope it gets some attention!
Yeah. i know it burns me to see someone fix up an old Ford and drop a Chevy 350 into it. Just sickening! I want to use the v6 since it is availible and cheaper on gas then a v8. Another thing I dont understand is why people put v8's in S-10's. In a Ranger, I can understand a little more, but an s10, like mine, weighs nothing. Maybe if it ever stops raining here, I can take some pictures for the gallery.
I say go for it! I've talked about putting an SBF...like a 347 stroker in a '75 or so Vette for some time now. I'd keep it stock-looking though, with just a small blue oval on the hood where the L-82 tags would be. I can't think of too many things that would tick-off the bowtiers more than 'violating' a Corvette. I just haven't been able to come up with the extra cash for the project, though.
I think your 'F 10" idea is great, but if it were me I wouldn't do the windshield thing. Maybe a little message on the tailgate about a 'heartbeat transplant' or something.
Not too big...but just big enough to read if you're standing behind it. Think of the fun you'd have at those all-Chevy shows when you pop the hood! It'll bust a lot of bowtie-cahones.
Good luck.
As much as Chevy lovers have urked me with their arrogant attitude over the years, I'd love to get as many old Chevy cars and pick-ups and put all Ford drivetrain in them. 'Cept I still wouldn't want to drive inside a chevy body.
What I'd REALLY REALLY like to do is win the lottery, buy a new chevy and take it to the next monster truck show and compete in the Tough Trucks contest..no holding back...destroy it. And then at the end...pull it up to the crushed cars and leave it there for the Monster Truck Freestyles.
OR...be rich enough to buy a couple Corvettes AND a couple new pickups, have them all prepared for Monster Truck competition...and pay the Bigfoot team to come do an all Ford Show.
I say what the hell, to each their own. The idea of V8's in the S10's is the old story, more power. The rear shares with the cars of the same age, as do the front I believe. It really is no different than a V8 in a Ranger. I'm not pure anything, and love to get purists going. It is always fun to irritate those that set rules on what you can do for a project. It would be fun to see the response when they look under the hood of any of these projects. When it comes to older stuff, I say anything goes, on newer, it's more a question of why, as to the effort. I do actually like GM stuff too, as I said, I am not a purist, so to see your projects complete would give me a chuckle, rather than bother me. I lkie pretty much most vehicles, if it runs fast and/or looks cool, I like it.
i hear you all keep calling chevy owners arrogant. when yet alot of what i have read on these boards twards chevy seems arrogant yourselfs. i own a 1992 Camaro. its my pride and joy. i love it to death and will have it till the day i die prolly. i also own a 1979 Bronco and a 1986 Bronco. yes im a chevy man but im not too high on my horse to drive and even own a ford. i say to each there own. if someone wants to drive a ford let them. if someone wants to drive a chevy let them. cant we all just aggree and say together die HONDA?
I used to go to the stock car races here. I tried to be nice and civil to Chevy lovers. I commented, to a guy sitting next to me, on an old Ford coupe that was nicely built and painted and thought it would have made a better street rod. All he said was..great way to get another Ford off the street...beat it up here and then crush it.
No more Mr Nice Guy with fools like him. After his first comment, it seemed to set him off on a tangent against Ford. He was drinking and I suspect looking for trouble. I may have been the one very capable of giving it to him, but I just took my wifes hand and said that I don't care to sit next to fools...and we moved. I heard the "mouth" screaming taunts all the way to the other end of the bleachers.
Most hardcore Chevy drivers are very rude. And I agree that a lot of Ford drivers can be the same. I don't run around getting drunk and mouthy to strangers about which I think is better, though. If you aren't derogatory to me, then the same courtesy will be given to you.
Still..if I had the bucks to "ruin" every Chevy out there..I probably would have fun and receive great amounts of joy doing it.

I have nothing against most any make....it's the people and how hey behave. Here, where I live, Fords are the king of the road now, but there are still a lot of Chevy owners who act as rude as the other poster experienced. I also happen to like Dodge. My theory is that if you can crank it up and drive it, it can and will break down. Each make has their own upsides and downsides. I personally think you cant beat a Dodge slant 6. Ford's answer would be the ever dependable 300 inline 6. Both are strong and durable engines. I love my Ford V8's, but Dodge's 318 is a tough engine, and one word says a lot for Dodge...HEMI. No wonder when Dodge has low sales, they pull it out of mothballs. Now, Chevy's are wonderful engines in their own right. I just never had much use for them, growing up around Fords. All three of the "big three" make wonderful machines. It's how you use them. Ford gets a bad rap for their tranny's, while Chevy's are legendary. Dodge...well, I don't know their tranny's much, other then the powerhouse I had in my 89 Daytona (FWD). That was a great little tranny. Ford and Chevy could learn about FWD from Dodge. Then you have the 9 inch rear end. Not much has to be said about them.....everyone knows hoiw great they are. So I guess if you want an odd vehicle, mate a Hemi to a 700R and run it to a 9 inch rear end. Bet you would make some noise with that combination!
People who are commited to any camp tend to be pretty vehement about it. I'm more a drag racer than anything, and it always makes me feel good when I'm at the strip, and in my "group" that parks together there are fords, chevys, dodges, and a pontiac. I think it's a damn shame more people can't get along.
On that note, I don't really hate anything, not even foreign vehicles, at least not as a matter of principle... but... since most of them are "ricers" with the altezza tails, fartcans and horrible driver attitudes to match... I do tend to pick on them.
Anyway, back to the point of the post. I have to agree that there's usually no reason not to power an old ford street rod with a ford powertrain, but I tend to feel the same way about the S10 project. The only thing I could see was if you got the truck for free (which you did), and had a spare engine and tranny laying around (which you do), so maybe it's not a bad idea. Otherwise, it just makes sense to drop a chevy engine in it, as it would just slide right in.
The other thing is, the novelty value of ****ing someone off would be fun for awhile... maybe... for you.... but if you have a chevy running around with ford logos on it, you run the risk of grouping yourself in with the ricers in toyotas and hyundais that throw on honda type "R" badges...

This is true, but I always laugh at them since most of them don't even realize what the R means. I have a friend with a Mustang, and he slapped an R on it, thinking it meant Racing.
I had a Dodge Daytona....stock 2.5 engine with a lazy little 5 speed. This one had no turbo, either. Well, I swapped out the stock tranny for a drag gear tranny, and let me tell you what a 177ci 125 horses would do with that tranny. Just by nature, and the pure low intellect of some kids these days, I would get challenges at red lights, which are numerous in my city. Well, I knocked off several 5.0's, Camero's, and a ton of "ricers" with not much effort. Now, I did get my share of Corvettes and the like that ate my lunch, but look what I had. Nothing makes somebody more angry then having a puny 4 banger skunk their gas hog. Darn I miss that car!
Years ago, I had a kid with a 5.0 mustang challenge me with my old 68 Chevy pickup, worn out 3 on the tree, 283, 4.10 rear. I could tell every shift he made, but he obviously didn't know how to run it, because I stayed with him then finally overtook him. Don't get me wrong, I had a little 4 popper mustang that I slapped a 351 into, which was one wild ride, and the kiddies still wanted to play. I had constdered a small block chevy, due to the rear sump setup, and if I had to do it that way again, I probably would, as I built my own oil pan, modified the headers from a 302 to make them work, and fabricated my own exhaust. It was a real PITA to do, and then the regular sevice work was a pain too, changing the starter really sucked. I stayed Ford to keep peace and resale value, but my ex ended up blowing it up and sold it cheap anyway.
Most of the racers around my area back in South Dakota were running chevy rods, pistons and rockers inside Ford blocks. I'm a GM follower too, but I am not ONLY GM. Ford has some great vehicles, as well as some killer engines, but the engineers have done plenty of things that tick me off, and I could ramble about some of them, but will not. GM is nowhere close to perfect, nor is any manufacturer, that's just the way it is. I despise Chrysler electronics, that's my biggest complaint there. The major reason Chevy small blocks are as popular as they are is the fact parts are cheap, and parts swap from many years, unfortunatel Ford changed engine style so many times that many of them are basically obsolete, and are difficult to use in varying applications. With the dimensions, bell housing and motor mount locations staying the same for so long, it makes it easy to swap around. But the attitudes about what's best is everyones opinion, and everyone is entitled to one, but don't push it on me. I worked with a guy that was absolute Ford, got offended when I pointed out some problems with Ford trucks that most of us know about and deal with, they are simply part of the design, no offense intended. He bought a Chevy, then all the sudden there was nothing better. I had to laugh at him for his turn around, but he wasn't really that smart anyway, and likely would have denied it. I ribbed him all the time for owning the Ford, just because it got to him. He was an arrogant cuss, so it was fun to bother him that way. Some people don't know when to quit. I also stop short of comments like Fordlover1951 had, as old Fords like that are the backbone of the street rod movement. Also, I'm in no hurry to crush old cars that are still salvageable and cool looking, no matter the make.
