Can someone please tell me if their is a way to check the brake booster if it is fuctional or not? Also What level or boost is my 302 vacume for the brakes suppose to be at? I hope this make's sense....
If you hook up a vacuum gage inline of the booster. The vacumm at idle should be about 20 with the engine warmed up. Havwe a helper press the brake pedal a couple of times while you read the guage. If it drops to about 10-15 and returns to 20, you should be OK. If it drops lower than that, your booster may be leaking.
If you pull the check valve fromt he booster after shutting off the engine and you do not feel any resistance, it is leaking.
Also, after you run the engine a few minutes, turn off the engine, you should have a 'soft' pedal for about three pumps of the pedal. In other words, it gets firmer after two or three pumpos of the pedal. this is normal. If you get a firm pedal the first pump or two, you most likely have a leaking booster.
Where are youpulling vacumm for the booster? You should be pulling directly off the manifold, not from the carb or a "T" fitting that is in the water port of the manifold.
