i'll tell ya what..... the best thing for me has been taking a screwdriver, stabbing it all the way through the filter, then taking it loose like that. But , make sure you put oil on the gasket on the filter, so you don't have to scrape the old one off next time you change the oil.
This is what i did. I read all the posts out there saying it was a bitch to get the oil filter off. So i went and looked and saw there was no way i was going to try using a strap wrench or and other type that you would need to get your hands in there. I went to pep boys and they sell a filter that is made for the 820. Its the socket type that goes on the end of the filter. I'll tell ya what.......it was money well spent. All i needed was a 3/8 ratchet and a little 3/8 extension and it came off with no problem. I would say i spent about 2 minutes getting the filter off. A breaker bar might have been a little easier......but couldn't find the darned thing. Give it a try its alot better than pokin holes and getting all cut up......and for $5 bucks its well worth it
my '04 truck has a grey filter on it-from the factory. i read in another forum that this not a motorcraft, but possibly a champion and that this is standard from the factory but don't know for sure. this is probably the reason for the difference in the crimped flutes on the end of the filter.
