Hello. On a friday night I was driving home from work and a co-worker in a S-10 was goign to try and pass me so I gunned it. My truck is a 1993 F-150 with a 302 and E40D tranny. I have ceramic bassani headers, a bassani y-pipe with a high flow catalytic converter, and a JBA EVOL stainless steel 3" diameter exhaust system. This gave my truck alot of power so I stayed well ahead of him but when I let off the throttle I heard popping noises. Each time I let off two or three popping noises followed. Anyone got any idea what is causing this?
Yeah, sounds like just some simple backfiring. Plugs probably arn't a bad idea, but the backfiring itself shouldn't hurt anything. My exhaust is similar to jp's and it pops all the time. I also have a buddy w/ similar exhaust to yours and his has been popping ever since
Is the air injection still hooked up? One of my air injection vavles hung up on mine and caused backfiring on deceleration. I just unhooked it. We don't have have emission testing where live so it isn't a problem for now, but I'll get around to fixing it one of these days.
Well yeah that's what happened. That valve on the back of my engine block broke off when I was changing the line that went from the check valve to my catalytic converter. The nozzle broke off anyway. And I tried to take the metallic line that is bolted to the back of the engine block off but one of the bolts broke in two and is still inside the engine block. So it only has one bolt holding it in place and it's warped. My check valve is currently nonfunctional. I hope I can pass the sniffer test without it.

Unless your engine is always turning fast I wouldn't use Bosch platinums. They use a porous ceramic insulator for better cooling during high-speed running but that porosity also lets it get HC saturated at low speeds and they usually foul. I wouldn't worry about the emissions test. I once had an Monte Carlo with a 4.3L that had no egr, cat, or air pump (just didnt replace those parts as they failed) that fast passed emissions testing.
