I was looking under the hood, with the engine cold, and noticed the upper radiator hose collapsed flat. I never changed the hoses so I plan on starting with changing it. I am just questioning if it is actually a failing hose or what is causing a "vacuum" that would cause this to happen. I changed the thermostat about a year ago.
I have added a few bottles of stop leak over the past couple of years to cure a seeping radiator and plan on replacing the radiator when it starts again.. but so far no leak anywhere
Try cleaning/replacing the radiator cap. It is supposed to allow coolant to flow back into the radiator when the engine cools and into the overflow tank as the engine heats up. If it doesn't work properly, as the engine cools, the coolant contracts and the overall volume goes down. The fault in the radiator cap can be seen in the upper radiator hose collapsing as a pressure drops in the system. It may be that the leak stop has crudded up the radiator cap, and thus it doesn't lift and shut properly.
While the radiator cap is a most likely suspect, there are other areas that can block the return. There is a hose that runs between the radiator and the holding tank for the extra coolant that can plug. Also, check to see if there is something at the bottom of the coolant over flow tank.
Remember that stop leak is meant to plug holes and does not know which holes to plug and which not. Sometimes it plugs the necessary ones!
