Radiator overflow hose question

8 months ago I completely changed out my entire coolant system with: radiator, water pump, heater core, thermostat, cap, fan clutch and all hoses. Last week the heater core started leaking and yesterday the radiator developed a leak. I've bypassed the heater core for now and replaced the radiator and cap. I replaced the cap because I thought maybe it was holding too much pressure resulting in the failures. Today while looking at it, it occurred to me that maybe I have the overflow hose on the wrong barb. I've been putting the hose on the upper barb and plugging the bottom. Is this wrong, should the hose be on the lower barb and the upper blocked off?

You have it right.. Top barb to coolant recovery tank, the bottom barb is for the line going to the intake manifold, (if yours used it) ...
