Axle Tag

I'd like to decipher the tag on my rear axle to see if it's still the original with the truck. The appearance and the performance of it don't exactly match up with the ale code on the door jamb, at least in my opinion. Also, I'd like ot find out if it's a limited slip or not. if needed, I'll post it here later. Thanks for any help.

Unfortnately, there's no way to see if the axle is the original. About all you can do is see if the axle ratio printed on the tag matches the one on the door sticker.

That's what I was meaning. I haven't actually looked at the tag yet. I just saw that there was one. I didn't know if there was a ratio printed on it or if the code needed to be deciphered......

One reason I was asking was because the rear lugs look like they're longer than the front ones, almost like they're meant for a dually. How can I tell the difference (if any other than the lugs) between the 10.25" and whatever is used in the duallies??

The dually axles are all Dana axles, unless I'm mistaken. The Dana axles have 10 bolts on the inspection cover, the Sterling axles have 12.

I think if your axle was a dually axle, you'd know it. All the dually axles I've seen up close look WAY different.

well, i have nothing to compare it to. I plan on crawling under tomorrow to check out the tag and, now, the number of bots on the cover.

I thought they were all Dana's (80??), also, but I've heard someone say that sometimes they put a Sterling 10.5" in 350s, but I don't know if perhaps that might have been SRW instead of DRW. I'll let you know tomorrow.

ok, I cross-referenced myself and found out that I was getting numbers messed up.

This is where I was getting those numbers. I guess this "webbing" where the 70 is stamped is just on the side of the differential?? If I'm wrong, please correct me. I still plan on crawling under tomorrow to take a look. I'll let you know what I find out because this is bugging the heck outta me!!

If its a Super Duty it has a Sterling 10.50 rear. The axle tag should have 2 lines of numbers on it. The bottom line is the ratio and whether or not it has a limited slip. It will read something like 3L73. 3:73 being the ratio and L for limited slip.

Well, it's a 10.25 for sure (12 bolts). The tag does have 2 lines on it, but I can't read all of it. The main part I'm wondering about is it says, the best I can read, "55 10 ......" I might try to take the tag off tomorrow to clean it up and read it a little better.

All of the older pre-superduty trucks (not sure how far back) had the Sterling 10.25" rear axle, dually and SRW. Ford didn't start using the Dana 80 in the rear until the 1999 model and the rear end became the Sterling 10.5" on the SRW trucks.
