I have a new to me '89 Ranger with a new 2.9 engine. The check engine light comes on after warm-up, at warm idle, the engine surges a bit.
I pulled the KOEO codes and got 67 and 41. I suspect the 67 is related to the air conditioner compressor not working, so I'm not concerned about that one. But according to the Haynes manual, 41 can indicate system lean if it shows up during the engine running test. The book says nothing about code 41 during the KOEO test.
What you got is probably a continuous code. Check the wiring to the O2, fuel pressure and for exhaust leaks, if all is OK then you'll need to run the pinpoint test to determine the exact cause, let me know if you need a copy.
