I have a 1999 Flareside, 4x4 automatic 4.6L v8.. It has started to blow blue smoke on start up if it has been sitting for a day or two.. and idles very poorly for a few minutes on startup as well.. I have just had the crank case seal replaced a week ago and that has not cleared up the problem.. i am having the spark plugs replaced this week due to the leaky crank case seal that wrecked them.. but would that have anything to do with the blue smoke??? It has lost a reasonable amount of bottom end power.. and when you step on the gas pedal right to the floor (like if you are passing on the highway) it makes this wierd noise and just doesnt want to go.. so if anyone can help please do!! thanks
thanks.. i will definately check the iac out. apparently all the seals and gaskets are good.. we had that checked on the weekend
I believe he is refering to the valve stem seals as it is something you must remove the valve covers to inspect and usually you can't tell if they are good unless you remove them. Something that CAN'T be done by visually inspecting them.
oh icic.. the dealer probably wouldnt have done that... the warranty is almost up so they are probably overlooking problems until the warrranty is done. It seems to be running a lot better now with the crank case seal and the new plugs. Would a dirty air filter have anything to do with it??
Valve seals? the more I read about these modular engines, the more GM they sound!!! Older Ford engines were built right and they didn't need a seal to stop oil from flowing down the valve, like chevies do. That really sux and there's no excuse for it.
Ford always used umbrella type seals and they seem to last almost forever. GM used a seal that looked more like just a round gasket. They didn't last long at all. A friend of mine bought a 87 SS Monte Carlo AeroCoupe new. He had to have them replaced 3 timed during the 60,000 warranty. The early Mod engines had some issues with valve seals, but that has been fixed for awhile.
