Hey! I just bought a 99 Explorer...and i only got one key with the truck...is there anyway i can tell if the truck was originally equiped with a remote keyless entry? and i just didn't get the fob?
also what's the deal with the transponder key what am i gonna have to do so that my wife can drive it too?(with her own key?)
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Nov-02 AT 11:33 PM (EST)]About the key:
You have to go to the dealer to get another key. You have to pay them for the key ($20.00) and then pay them to program it ($29.00). You cannot program it yourself unless you already have 2 keys, then you can program the third. Check your owners manual and it tells you this, also. I am going through the same thing myself as I just bought a 99 Explorer Limited 2 weeks ago. It sucks but that's how it is. You can find the transponder keys on Ebay cheaper but I you're taking a risk with quality and you still have to pay your Ford dealer to get it programmed. The prices I quoted are what they told me on the phone here at Beach Ford in Myrtle Beach, SC so they may be more or less depending on where you are.
About the keyless remote:
I would like to know the answer to this question also. I can't tell whether or not mine has the keyless remote or not, either. It's a Limited model with 5.0L V8, leather trim, and every damn option you could possibly think of and then some. So, I would have to think that it has keyless remote capability but it didn't come with a key fob either. BTW, you can also buy the key fobs online for much cheaper than the dealer but again, like everything else on Ebay, you never know for sure what you're getting. Just search for "Ford Explorer" under "cars, trucks, parts" then "parts & accessories" and you'll find all kinds of listings.
I've gotten extra transponder keys for my X as well as my father's X for free at my Ford dealership. Of course, we've done a lot of business there and they're real nice.
As far as the remote keyless entry, I just got my 99 X brochure out to check. The XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited all come with remote keyless entry standard. It was optional on the other models (Sport, XL, XLS).
