CD Changer question
I proceeded to remove the changer from the center console, and take it partially apart. I got the front cover off and then the top cover off so I could at least partially see inside. I couldn't see any problems that way so I took it back out to the Explorer in its partially disassembled mode, plugged it back in, and watched as it went through the process of pulling in each cd, holding it for a few seconds, then spitting it back out. The only definite thing I can tell is that the player is not spinning the cds at all. I'm assuming that this is probably the only problem and if I can get that fixed it will start working again.
Does anyone have any ideas why it isn't spinning the cds? Do you know what spins the cds? Anything I can look for inside the player that might help me out?
Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.
Yes, I did eventually get the cd changer working in my Explorer. Apparently the first "cleaning" I gave it was not very thorough. My first cleaning involved using a CD cleaner disc and running it through the player 20+ times (see above posts). That helped a little bit, but not for very long (again, see previous posts). The second time around I took the changer out of the vehicle, took it inside, partially dis-assembled the case, then took a can of compressed air and blew it in every crack and hole in the case that I could get the compressed air straw through. I also blew it in the main opening where the cd cartridge goes towards the guts of the player, including between the rollers that grab the cd and pull it in. After doing this several times the player started working again. It's died on me a few times since then, or gotten worse to the point where it stops playing cds suddenly and flashes "NO CD". Each time it starts getting worse I either run the CD cleaner disc through it a few times, or blow some more compressed air into it.
I'm not exactly sure my theory is correct, but based on what I did to get it working, plus some information I obtained from various CD drive repair sites, I believe the CD disc sensor was dirty. Some cd players will not start the spinning mechanism until they can detect that a CD is present. I believe this was the problem on my CD changer - the sensor was so dirty that it couldn't see the cds, even though it was pulling them in fine.
It's possible this might be the problem with yours - or it might not. If you need help getting the changer out of the vehicle (should you decide to attempt this), let me know and I can try to provide you with some tips on how to go about doing it. It's not all that difficult, it just took me a little while to figure it out!
