Who here knows leather? I want to make a minor adjustment to one of my holsters and was wondering how to go about it. I heard you can soak the leather in something and adjust it that way, but I don't recall details. Also, I'd like to make sure it keeps the shape of the firearm, so can I wrap it up in saran wrap to keep the liquid off and leave it in the holster to make sure the leather maintains shape?
What kind of adjustment do you want to make? If the leather is vegetable tanned then yes you do soak it in water to shape or tool it. If the leather is chrome tanned (garment leather) then soaking does nothing. If the holster has been finished (has a laquer or acrylic coating) then the odds are that the leather won't absorb much or enough water to shape it.
Soaking the holster then putting the wrapped pistol in till it drys is one way to shape it. When done make sure to condition the leather with a quality conditioner. Lexol is an excellent product for this.
It's just one of those belt slides, you know, the ones that it doesn't matter slide/barrel length, because it just grips the central frame area. It does not appear to have any sort of coating, it just seems to be thick, fairly stiff leather. Essentially it is 2 identical pieces of leather, and the ends are shaped into tabs with belt slots. The tabs are turned in toward the left to make it a right hand holster. My question is, since the leather pieces are the same, would it be ok for me to turn the tabs to the right to make it a left handed holster?
