Hi guys. I have a 00 Explorer Sport with only one ignition key. The owners manual says I must have two keys to program another key myself. Is this true? Or is it just another way to get you to take it to the dealer?
Thanks.
Don
Unfortunately, it's true. Only way to program a new key when you only have one on the PATS system is with Ford's computer. In addition to the outrageous key price that they will charge you, they will also charge you for 1/2 to 1 hour of labor. Expect to pay from $60 - $100 for a new key. Pick up a third key after you get your two keys so you can program it yourself and keep it as a backup.
I have the same problem. I just bought a 99 Explorer Limited and not only did they not give me the remote lock/unlock key fob but I only got one key. I called Beach Ford in Myrtle Beach, SC and they told me $20.00 for the key and $29.00 to program it. $49.00 for damn key.
Anyhoo, you can find lot's of them on Ebay for around $10.00 but you would still have to get it programmed so you may as well just get it at the Ford dealer. I read on here a couple of times that if you get lucky the dealer may do it for free. But, knowing that most dealer service departments charge rip-off prices on everything, I doubt that.
Suck it in and pay it as I will. They got us by the ***** on this one.
