Pinging problems with the 3.0 liter engine
Hello all. I have been a member of this forum for a long time, but it has been a LONG TIME since I've visited or posted. Long story. You don't want to hear all about my life on this forum, if at all
I have a friend with a 2000 Ranger, 2WD, 3.0 liter engine, automatic, air, extended cab. It has a pinging problem. I do remember reading alot about that in terms of others having similar problems in this forum. I can't remember if there was any ONE solution that stood out as superior over all others, or if any solution AT ALL exists. If this were a much older engine, I could fix it myself. But, knowing that there is no distributor, no way to control fuel mixture, ignition timing, ANYTHING for that matter, makes things very difficult. I have 2 very specific questions;
First, does this model year and engine have a knock sensor?? [I would have thought that ALL engines in ALL cars & trucks built in the last 10 or 15 years have one, but I seem to recall reading in this forum that a few model years and engines in fact do not].
Second, is there a very specific KNOWN EFFECTIVE CURE for the pinging problems that exist??
My friend uses 89 octane to reduce the pinging, and it helps, but doesn't totally get rid of it. I would like very much to find a way to run the truck on 87 octane due to the incredible prices of gas, but to ALSO ELIMANATE THE PINGING 100%.
By the way, if it helps, it is worst when the torque converter is locked up, and the engine is laboring at low revs. When the engine is allowed to rev up, as in lower gears, or no lock up, it doesn't seem to do it at all (or barely noticeable if at all).
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
Mike
No knock sensors on the 3.0L "vulcan " engine.
