sore wrist

Last year I worked a few months at a meat processing plant. The work I did was tough on my wrists. Messed up my left one a bit. I wore a brace 'til I quit that job. Now, it seems whenever I try to do something (in this case: work on the truck) that puts stress on my wrist, I end up in pain for three days or more.

Anyone know any tips on how to get that soreness to go away quicker? I've put heat on it, but I still can't seem to loosen it up.

While you were at that job, did you break anything?

Back in high school, I tripped over a basketball, and ran into a wall, using my hands as a "stopper." I ended up chipping some bones in my wrist, and the soreness didn't really go away until about a year later.

I still get it sometimes.

This page has alot of good info. For the light exercise I would get on of those ***** with the gyroscope inside. They really do work once you figure them out, and you can control the intesity during use (you make it faster as you use it). Actually, here you go: http://us.shop.com/cc.amos?main=cata...=06190436&GA=1

<Wait a second. Sore wrist? Meat? Hmm, gotta be a joke in there somewhere>

A few things that will help. Heat a muscle, ice a joint. Take a warm shower in the morning to get the muscles warmed up. Then do a little wrist work. Hold your forearm parallel to the floor. Make a real loose fist. Then holding your forearm steady, print out the ABC's with your fist. Go kind of slow at first, capital block letters and go for as much range as you can. The whole alphabet will give your wrists a full range of motion without much repetition or thinking involved. Just as soon as you get done, get ice on them for about 15 minutes. I've tried the veggies and icepacks the doctors give, but I use a small towel filled with icecubes, wetted down and thrown in the freezer. Use it and throw it back in the freezer. About the time it starts dripping the icing is done anyway and after a few cycles it gets molded. Do this once in the morning at once at night. Use a wrist emobilizer at night. If it's both wrists, alternate nights.

If, after a week or so this doesn't help, the doctor can get you in for ultrasound heating. (That's what my wife goes through anyway. ABC's work for me - I don't do the doctor thing.)

Does it hurt when you are relaxed or sleeping? If so then it is possibly carpal tunnel.

And since I see the seriosness of this thread, I won't post what I originally had thought!!!!!

Not when relaxed. I have a fair range of motion without pain unless I put pressure on it. I'll try the exercises and ice and see what happens.

I'd suggest going to your doctor and talking to him. Perhaps some anti inflamitory meds and physical therapy would do the trick.

I have had (20 years ago) bi-lateral Carpal Tunnel release surgery.
About 7 months, I had to have a Ganglion cyst removed from my right wrist.
Carpal tunnel syndrom can pretty well be diagnosed with near 100% certainty (nerve conduction tests).
Ganglion cyst are generally easily identifiable (do a Google search to learn more).
Do not overlook simple tendonitis. Tendonitis can be a real pain and can be very slow to heal. Exactly where the pain is and what causes it to hurt more can be useful in identifying tendonitis. If it is Tendonitis, minimize use is the first step. NSAIDs (Ibuprofen is the best from my experience) can help reduce pain and inflamation. But, they should be taken therapeuticaly (not just a few every now and then) in order to help correct the condition.

Believe it or not, meat processing is one of the leading lines of work that leads to RSI (Repetitive Stress Injuries) to the wrist.
If you have never had such problems, it is easy to poo-poo the whole idea. I sympathize. Such problems can put a major damper on your lifestyle.

Probably best to see a doc. My guess, you'll get a Cortisone injection.

Good luck.

My wife had to get surgery for her repeative wrist injury. It might be entirely possible you have a genetic joint problem you are not aware of that just surfaced because of the work. If you still have pain after more then two months then it would be time to see the doctor.

I am sure that you can buy a bracelet made of copper with magnets in them. It helps my wrists when they bother me. Broke both of them, one hitting a fence with my snowmobile and the other playing football.
