I have a 97 F150 with 160k miles and I notice that when I accelerate from a complete stop, I feel a shudder when the tranny shifts into overdrive. Once it goes into overdrive it runs just fine. It doesn't always do it but I'm thinking the overdrive is on the way out. I would like some opinions on this problem.
Well, you can try doing a fluid flush and changing the filter. This might fix the problem entirely (not likely), or it might band-aid it for a couple weeks.
Might be the ol torque shudder. This is where the clutch in the TC starts to slip when engaging. Usually you will notice this when you are accelerating at a gentle pace and around 40 to maybe 60mph. As the TC starts to slip, it will feel kind of like driving on that grooved pavement. Under moderate to hard acceleration you won't feel the shudder, I am guessing because pressure is a bit higher and enough to force the clutch tighter.
If it is tc shudder, you will eventually overheat the fluid which will make the seals brittle which will cause debris to get in the oil which will cause intermittant hard shifting and eventually things get worse.
Sometimes a fluid change will fix the problem. With your miles and assuming they are original, I would suspect your tc is getting ready to die. So you may need a new TC at least, and maybe a mild rebuild. If you wait too long, hard parts will start to fail and then it gets expensive.
Thanks for the tips guys. Last night on the drive from work I didn't feel any shudders. In the seven years I've had this truck I've only had the tranny flushed twice. The last one was over a year ago at 146,698 miles. I guess I could have it flushed again to prolong its life. Money is tight right now and a new tranny would hurt.
