hi im wondering if someone knows where to get a diagrham of a 1959 edsel\Ford generator. i want to try to rebuild it myself rather than send it out.
Also what are the things i sould check or replace?
Thanks
Dave
59 Edsel..myself I think I would take it to a carb electric place and have them give you a price.... It use to be years ago..you just cleaned up the armature with some light sand paper and replaced the brushes... But with that said..I dont know how long the bearings have been in it..and if the armature is running true.. etc...
Just my own opinion! Russ
And also if you have a way to check the magnets for a strong enough field current? to produce the right amount of voltage?
if your willing to spend the money your local parts store could get you one for around $120. why i say this is because a friend of mine tried rebuilding one himself and ended up buying a new one.
One of our sponsors, Mac's Auto Parts has an Edsel catalog,as well as on line, in most cases the brushes wear out. There might be some residual magnetism in the fields but nut enough to attract a screwdriver. I have a 58 shop manual I'll check when my Son gets back from work to see if he can scan the gen picture. Usually there was a long back and a short back gen (depending upon the length) Ford and Merc will fit.
The field is not magnetic. This is a generator, not a motor. The brushes mount in a holder that has a 'retainer' that will hold them away from the armature until the rear plate is installed. Brushes mount with nuts & bolts, so are way easier than starter motor brushes. If you don't bang it around too much, you probably will not have to polarize it.
Check the bearings while you have it apart. Clean it up with 'brake clean'. Grease any bearings that are accessible, and check the 'spin' of any others.

hi. last night i took and a 12 volt battery and put the negetive to the G and positive to the F and touched it there for a secound. now a screwdriver will stick to the magnets inside. my bearings look good and spin well. now all i need is new brushes and solder in my new terminals and i should be good i hope. i also cleaned up the armature with some fine sand paper. is there any thing i should check for on the armatere? it lools to be good
Thanks
Dave
Well it looks like your on track now..armature cleaned up , bearings are good, a new set of brushes, you got the magnatism back in the mags..souds like your good to go!
Lets us know how good it works after assy...good luck..Russ
