Hello,I am not a mechanic and need some help.I have removed the box from my F250 and am going to put on a flat bed but that isn't the problem. When I wanted to paint the under carriage of the truck I had to remove the tires not only couldn't I get them off my ermergency brake on the back left tire seemed to be stuck on. After many suggestions I was able to loosen the tires and get them off. I tapped the drum and the break released. When I finished painting I put the tire back on and after putting the nuts back on my tire was seized again. I now think the problem is in the hub but I don't know how to remove it. Can anyone help me?? I should also mention that some of th outer hub has broken away. Is it still safe to drive if I can get my tire to release. Thanks to anyone that has suggestions. Charli
You are saying that it is inside the hub? The 8 little bolts on the end take off the axle shaft. Once you get that off, then you can straighten the tabs that lock the outer nut on the spindle, then take off the tab and inner nut. If the brakes will let it, then the drum should slide off. Hope this helps you, Ted
Thanks Ted. The brake has released but with tapping on the drum there are chunks missing on the outer edge of the drum. It sure doesn't look to safe to put the tire back on and drive. Will we have to get a new drum?? Any pictures I can find call this a dust cover so does it cause a problem when pieces of it are missing?? Thanks again Charli
Unfortunately, I can't find anything that calls any part a dust shield. I looked in my tech manuals. I did take some pictures and put them in the drivetrain album. The brake one is probably what you are talking about. In the picture, there is a yellow lip that extends over the backing plate (painted black in the picture). I would assume that if this yellow piece was cracked off, then it would be bad. To me, this would signify that the drum has lost its structural integrity, and become brittle and cracked. Sorry I can't help you a little more, just unclear as to what you are looking at. If you can, take a picture of it and put it in a gallery. That would help. Good luck, Ted
I will take some photos and leave them in the Gallery. I don't understand how I can see your pictures. Are they in the Gallery?? First day on the site can be a bit confusing. Thanks Charli
To look in pics of a user, left click on their name. A drop down will appear, and then you can select view gallery. Hopefully my pics can help you. Ted
Found you thanks! I have put pictures in the Gallery under Big Red Album. I don't know if you can see the cracks and pieces missing. Your opinion would help. I'm afraid that you are probably right about having to replace this part. ug!! Charli
I was afraid you would say that.Oh well back to the drawing board. I guess I will have to start at the beginning of our forum and follow your instructions on how to take it off. The book we have here says I need a hub puller is that right?? Charli
No. Just undo the 8 bolts and the axle should slide right out. Then there is 2 huge nuts inside with a lock tab between them. It is similar to a manual hub front end. Once those are taken off, the assembly should slide off. Then you can look at replacing the drums.
