Eaton Axle Removal?

Hello, I need a little help!

After waiting for a little better weather I finally tore into the rear end on my 1979 F800 dump truck. to find the curb side Axle is broken not the pinion shaft.

and I can't get the RS axle out. this is were I am at.

have the drive shaft out, two speed motor off, CS axle end off, tires off, RS axle nuts and wedges off. I have hit the axle and it bounces in and out a little, I tapped some wedges in and it just gets solid.

do I need to release the brakes and rotate the hub? hit the Darn thing? I don't want to break anything else. so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Steve!

Since one axle broke, it is possible that the other axle had a go at breaking as well. If the splines are twisted, that may cause the issue you describe.

Since this is a full floating axle, and since the drive shaft is pulled, there shouldn't be any load of any kind on that axle shaft.

Should.

Try releasing the brakes, (blocking please before you do that)

Do you have the wheels off?

We have had issues where we had to put a steel bar in one side to try and knock the other side out.

I came home tonight and determined that the axles were coming out.
Drove some wedges in the darn RS. and beat and beat. got the axle to move a little. never seen an axle come out so hard. then it was on to the CS. took a Rail Road pry bar and went from the RS through to the axle end. and with a 16# sledge drove the rest of the broken axle shaft out. and this is were I stand right now.

Next stop is dropping the PIG.

have a Question? should I replace both Axle Shafts? I don't see anything wrong with the RS axle. but I would not believe these shafts would ever brake.

Thanks Steve!

As long as the splines are straight and there's no other damage I'd run it.

At school we have a 6" chunk of an axle that snapped, friction welded itself back together and then snapped again in a different spot!
