my 86 f-150 381 w/duel tanks, boggs out when I reach speeds of 35-40mph. under these speeds it runs like a charm. I changed the fuel filter, machanical pump, and still it boggs. So, I just droped the the front tank and pulled out the tube with the sock on it. I was able to draw and blow air thru the sock filter with no problem, it seemed to be wide open, no debri in tank ( puzzeld ) I did'nt re-install the tank yet! because I'm not sure of the problem.
I was wondering if it could be the fuel selector valve? so I removed it. Now I'm just going to install the front tank and by-pass the fuel selector valve, hoping thats the fix??? then run the truck to see if it still boggs at 30 -40mph.
then if all else fails? I think I'll replace the distributor module. Need to know if I'm on the right track, and is there any other problem solving tips.
NOTE:
I did replace the ignition module w/ a full tune up.
You just might be right! About a week ago, I sprayed a little carb cleaner into the carb and it stalled, then I re-started the truck and sprayed around the linkage of the carb and it stalled. Hummmm! So i tightend down the throttle body and sprayed again,no stalling around the throttle body. But did stall when I sprayed into the carb.
I have an Edelbrock 1406 on a 351w, the thermactor has been removed If that makes any differance? today I'm going to install the fron gas tank, if that don't work, then I'll rebuild the carb I guess.
I re-installed the front tank and by-passed the fuel selector valve, took it on the HWY, went 20 mi, and wa'la run's like new. Got it up to 70mph no more bogging, not even a sputter.
the whole thing is to by-pass the selector valve. once you have removed the selector valve then all you are doing is making a connection from the front tank to the fuel pump. I used a 5/8" x 10" brake line, cut off the flaired ends and remove the nuts, with 2 clamps and attach it to the line coming from the fuel tank then to the line coming from the fuel pump.
so I'm only running on the front tank for now!
hope that helps!
