Dimmer switch

Is the dimmer switch on these ford pickups pretty much a universal item, or do I have to get one that will fit on my 71...? I think I read in the forum somewhere that the headlight switch, or the dimmer switch could cause problems with the rest of the lights, in my case, particularly the rear lights..I know that mine is not working properly, however, I might have to invest in a new headlight switch as well....Stupid rears it's ugly head again...Nomadic...!

You can pick up the floor dimmer switch at Autozone for under $10.00 It probably could effect the lamps because I believe it is hooked indirectly to the flashers.

Once upon a time, did someone try to add a "custom" trailer light connector?

Not to my knowledge Road Dog...It did have some type of metal connector that I asked about on the forum...It had two wires going into it, and looked factory..I know not what purpose it served...Currently I can get both running lights to work, one signal light and a backup light that stays on all the time...I will get a new dimmer switch tomorrow and give that a shot...Dang the luck....lol.....Nomadic...Thanks for the replies gentlemen.....!

Not having read your past posts, that metal connector, is it your flasher? The flasher is the shape of a cylinder.

Not a flasher...this was in the rear, and had to wires going into it...It is cylindrical in shape, perhaps 3/4 the size of a dime, with a smaller cylinder that is hollow, and it is wrapped....it definitely was there when it came off the assembly line....I have no idea what it might have gone to....and really doubt now if it was ever hooked up....going to install a new dimmer switch today...currently all of my lights in the front are working, and I can get the running lights, one signal light and one backup light to work.....I got it off the forum, so I know that the yellow and green wires go to the signal light, the brown is the running lights, the red and black should be the backup lights, and the other wire, which is a hot wire hooks to .......? Believe me, I an not an electrician.......Have tried everything...lol......Help if you can....Thanks....Nomadic

Sounds like a hookup for camper lights.

Talking

I have owned this old truck for a least 25 plus years...but like I have stated befor it was parked, for the most part 18 of these years....The metal connector that I refer to has wrapped with that fabric looking material that came from the factory...I am not saying that it was not a camper hookup, but believe me, no one in my family did that neat a job if it was not installed at the factory....It is not a big deal, but I was just curious as to what it was. Ironically when I removed the tail lights to check the grounds, I found an antique cap gun thaat someone had dropped in there many years ago. All I could see was the barrel of the old gun...so I was quite astounded find that the gun was intact....The old truck gave up quite a bit of history, with items that I found under the seat.....Wow...Time does fly.....!

The dimmer switch does not have anything to do with any of the lights except the headlights. It sounds to me as if you have a problem in the turn signal cam in the steering column, under the wheel. I would treat the backup lights as a seperate issue from the rest. There should be a backup light switch mounted on the steering column under the hood it is a mechanical push type switch activated be the shifting linkage.
