This thread as brought back a memory for me that might help many people track there fuel usage. Back in the seventies, where there was major gas "shortages" vacuum guages where very popular. There was a green area in the guage which showed "economy" and a red area that showed "high consumption". I'm not sure how you'd install one of these guages (if they're still available) in a modern engine, but I think I'm going to do a google search for ha-ha's.

Yes, like chasman97 said earlier in this thread...

"The one thing that I have noticed is that good milage is there to be had. If you pay attention to the way you are driving you can and will get some good milage. On the other hand if you drive them hard they can get pretty thirsty. I installed a scangauge a while ago and have learned or taught myself with the help of the gauge how to stretch out a tank of gas. You can actually see in real time the change in milage, punching it, going up or down hill etc. Pretty neat unit."

I went to scangauge.com, they sell that cheap for what it does, and it's an easy install, I might end up getting me one.

Take care,

Dave

Yes, determining your vacuum level is one of the best ways to maximise your mileage aside from watching your speed, etc..

I've read the same report in a couple of truck magazines. Also I've found no improvement in quarter mile times at the drag strip in my last two trucks when putting the tailgate down.

2005 Scab XLT 4.6 6.5' bed. 1875 miles and I am getting a fluctuation between 16.5 and 17.5...it doesn't really make a diffrence right now how I drive...I tried a tank with very little hard acceleration and one tank with the way I used to drive a few years ago and there was 1 mpg diffrence between the two tanks...

I have heard the rumor that, even though you have to use 93 octane, the superchips and diablo re-tuners will kick your mileage up?

What about the cold air boxes, exhausts and such?

Hey people..

I just bought a 04' Supercrew 4x2 Lariat.. I've also heard of chips that can save you in mileage.. Is this true? I used to be into performance.. but now I'm forced to go into fuel economy!!!

Any input on chips that help in fuel economy will be greatly appreciated !

04 FX4 with 36,000 miles. I put on a soft bed cover( easy to take off when hauling stuff), use the cruise control whenever possible, keep to within 5 of the speed limit and don't race away from the stop light.....now avg. almost 18 mpg (17.8 on the last tank full)

underdrive pulleys

Underdrive pulleys slow down the accessories, water pump, alternator, etc. Try Motorhaven first, Summit has them, also March Performance, others have them also.

My 04 Lariat SuperCrew 5.4, 3:73 LS, gets 19.4 to 19.8 @ 76mph under 70 it gets over 20, around town about 14, since most of my driving is around town my weelky average is 15.6. I rest the computer at every fillup, and have checked it manually, there is very little difference.

My '04 scab was averaging about 14.5-15 at best with 70/30 mostly highway driving. Now at 15000 miles it is kicking up to 16 on average. I do have a cat back and air intake. I can't decide on a programmer, not enough positive info on better mileage.

Thru 17,500 miles I have been averaging 17.5 mpg. I have the 4.6 V8 in my STX regular cab. Not bad considering my 2000 Ranger with 4.0 V6 only averaged 18.3 mpg.
