Help diagnosing noise!

I have a 79 F250 4x4 with a 4 speed and a 400. Whenever I get up to hiway speeds there is a high pitched whine that is synchronized with the ground speed not the rpms of the motor. Any idea what this may be? The repair manual says it could be low fluid in the Tranny or transfer case.
Thanks

It could also be the rear differential going out.

Leave the truck in park and rock the truck back and forth (front to back) while watching the driveshaft. There should be very little to no play between the driveshaft and tire movenemts.

Does it make the noice while ridding out each gear in the tranny? Low fluid could defantaly make some whinning noise's.So could a clutch not adjusted right.Maybe your throw out bearing isn't being released all the way cousing a whinning noise.

THanks

Thanks for all the responses. I know it is not the tires as it has hiway tread on it that is almost worn bald (I bought this from an older gentleman). I looked underneath and the tranny and transfer case are completely covered in oil. So I am assuming that it is the one or both of those leaking. The throw out bearing was a possibility but it does not seem to matter what gear it is in. I have heard bad throw out's before and this does not sound like those. The rear diff is tight.

I am going out right now to fill the tranny and the transfer case with some 90W and see what happens. Thanks

Card,
My experience with rear ends out of adjustment is greater than I would like to admit.
If the rear end is low on oil but still in adjustment, they can whine. They will be significantly louder while on the gas and almost dissapear on a coast.
Does this sound familar?

Fisher-
I went out and checked all of the fluids in both diff.s and in the tranny and the transfer case, yet the noise still exists. Both my diffs seem to be tight and I have been able to pinpoint the noise to the front passenger side. I think that it is the ujoint that couple the front axle for the 4 wheel drive. it is worn badly and had a lot of play in it. So that will be my next fix. If that does not take away the noise (along with new bearings while that is being fixed) I am not sure. I have had both diffs checked by a mechanic and they are supposedly fine. Thanks for the reply.

Sound's more like a rear main seal leaking.

The front axle u-joint if it is bad won't make a high pitched whine, more of a clunking noise

I wonder if it could be the wheel bearing or the hub for the 4 wheel. At any rate I am sure that the front ujoint must be replaced. I have pinpointed the noise to the front passengers side of the truck. Is there anything else that could cause the whining?

If you have any play at all in the u joints, they will need to be replaced. And yes, they will squeal and whine.

There are also needle bearings in the hub spindle.

I noticed today that after I turned the hubs in the noise did not immediately come back. This may be a coincidence I am not sure. I do know that the ujoint has quite a bit of play in it. THe hubs are brand new so I am not sure about the needle bearings. How much of a job is it to replace the u joints?

the axle u-joints are realitivly easy iff you have some mechanical skills. i would also check to see that everything is tight in the front. i.e. brake calipers and that your brakes aren't dragging. i have had that happen and i replaced the pads it was fine

Interesting answers! The whine does get louder if I go faster. I never thought about the front brakes. I did not think that they could make a noise like that. Something to think about.
Thanks
