Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I just bought a 99 F250 4x4 Diesel 7.3L, it has 74,000 miles on it. I have an automatic transmission and when it shifts into overdrive it will sometimes rev the motor up by maybe 50 rpms or so before it shifts. Is this normal for diesels to shift kind of hard into overdrive or is my transmission going. When the truck goes thru the rest of the gears it's hardly noticeable when shifting (it shifts real smooth). Also I'm planning on buying the Predator tuner is this a good choice? What kind of air filters should I be running for the best performance? I'm new at diesel's so any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Welcome to FTE! I just purchased and installed the Diablo Predator tuner and installed the 60hp option and firm shifting. I've had the TYMAR intake for about 20K miles, good product. Next is 4" exhaust with 3 1/2" downpipe (which is abour 10 days late now, that's another story) and pyrometer purchase/install. Predator IMO definately woke up the PSD, Tymar helps suck good air, and I'm not romping on the fuel pedal until I get gauges and pyro. Don't risk it (turbo) getting too hot too handle!!! This is what I suggest. There will be others sharing their concept...
thanks for info. Wow I have a lot to learn on Diesel engines to get more out of them. Like I said I'm new at all diesels. Would anybody suggest that if I were to get the predator I better get a pyrometer right away with it. ALso still looking for any info about the tranny. How do they shift. I've also been doing more research is the Bully Dogg 4 any good it seems that everyone likes the predator better is this true. Thanks
Welcome to the forum. I'll give you the same advice I gave my son in law when he bought his first diesel. Before you do anything to increase the power output, get a foundation laid that will allow you to control/monitor it. The foundation consists of an improved intake, downpipe, 4" exhaust, and gauges to monitor things. Then, when you add a chip/tuner, your truck will get full benefit from the added power, and you'll know if your approaching the danger level.
Most people don't add the mods in that order. Instead, they get antsy and put in the chip/tuner before they get gauges. Once they get the gauges, they wonder how much damage did they do without knowing. If you do nothing else first, get gauges. The other things will make your chip/tuner work better, but the gauges will keep your truck alive until you get the other things done.
I have a '99 with an automatic as well. I have recently run into some grief with my torque converter (two in one year and only 48K miles on truck). I have been fortunate though that ford has paid for both and I have exceeded my 5 year warranty coverage. Anyway, my local dealer told me that they had a bad "batch" of torque converters in 99 and my original happened to be one of them so they replaced it after my warranty expired. However, the new improved t\c crapped out on me last week. They said it was the first new/improved t/c they had seen come back after the warranty replacement. They could be blowing smoke but I thought I would pass it along in case it might help ya. Good luck with the truck.

I have the same thing going on with my transmission, only I would say it flairs up about 150 to maybe 200 rpm just as it shifts to overdrive. It is a 1999 7.3 with the 4R100. It was just rebuilt before I bought it. This can't be normal. The builder says it seems OK to him. I believe he just doesn't want to do any warranty work. Any comments or possible fixes ???
when all was stock on my truck i do remember kind of a delayed shift from 3 to 4 and a little increase in rpm's, it almost seamed like it was shifting twice. but the addition of a chip and a sonnax valve and tricumilator springs sloved all that
