Transmission filter and fluid

Hey All,
I'm new to diesel trucks and new to do it yourself maintenance I have access to all required tools at the navy base. I was wanting to know how hard it is to change transmission filter and fluid. I just purchased a 1999 F250 fluid level looks good but I don't know when it was last changed. 108000 miles on the truck. Also how hard is it to flush coolant and change it. I don't have lots of motor knowledge but willing to try if its not super hard. I read on this forum about cat coolant lasting 300000 miles before change is required is that true and if it is does anyone use it in their truck.

Thanks for any help

Changing tranny fluid and filter isn't especially difficult, nor messy. On your truck, you've got a drain plug for the tranny pan, similar to the one on your oil pan. Merely undo the plug and let the fluid drain out. Once that's done, you can remove the bolts holding the pan on, and the filter will be staring you in the face. The pan gasket is reusable, so you want to be careful not to damage it.
Cat coolant will last that long, but I believe you have to install a bypass filtration system to achieve that.

I have another question if anyone knows. I was told by a Ford mechanic that it is not neccessary to buy a filter. The filter that is on the transmission is actually a screen and can be re-used. Just clean out with Brake-clean or something similiar. Make sure it is good and dry and re-install. Any comments would be appreciated. Might save 35 dollars on a filter. Even if this is so I personally would change it every other time.
