OK. I have poured through the other posts, but am still not sure I have my answer yet. The patient is a 1998 F-150 Supercab 4.6L. The problem is that air only blows through the defrost vents. It does not matter what function switch is turned to. The fan and temp switch work. There are no problems with obtaining hot or cold air. It just doesn't come out where I want it to.
What is the culprit? Am I right in assuming that vacuum controls vent selection? Does the blend door function to direct air flow?
Seems like you have the same problem I have on my truck (88 Ford 150 300 I6). The problem is most likely the control mechanisim directly behind the "climate control" selectors. There are two mechanical lines that run from the back of the selector ***** (air vent location & hot/cool). Ford uses a really cheap way of terminating the steel control cable to slector *****, and they quite often break. I found that was the problem on my truck when I removed the dash. Quickest solution would be to remove the dash bolts and tilt the dash back to get a peak inside, (i don't believe that you will have enough "wiggle room" by simply removing the climate control section above the radio.

Any information would be appreciated.
It sounds like your vacuum selector switch. I am dealing with the same problem right now on a 92 F150. At first it only blew thru the defrost vents so I changed the switch. Now it only reacts and changing vents at high to low rpms which is a vacuum issue. I am changing the , I now have to search for vacuum leaks. I will let you know when I finally solve this problem.
But in your case , definitely the vacuum selector switch, it's real easy to change a matter of minutes.
I found the problem. There is a t-connector right behind my battery for the vaccuum lines. This was broken. Replaced it with no problem, and have had no problems with the vents since. After that I developed a leak in the AC system that dumps the refrigerant in a 24hour period. I don't know if it is related to the vaccuum issue. I doubt it. The leak is near the compressor based off of a dye injection.

Same problem with our 1998 Expedition. Thanks for all the info on this thread!
