The trick to talking on a cb without booster is to key low and swing high. You want to tune for optimum modulation. My mobile radio, 25 classic, keys 1.4 watts and swings 48 watts. It talks good bare foot and does even better driving a Texas Starr 500. 780 swing. Idealy it would be nice if you could key high and not swing, but you would burn up radio if you tuned like that. Swing is what counts on AM. I love the Golden Eagle for Base Radio. Analog Tuner. It kills the other C.B. Folks when some of us analog operators go to channel 5 1/2. They can hear a little bit, but cant talk. Antenna is an important part, when I had my Wilson 40 ft directional beams up, I talked to Germany quite regularly. With Antron 99, my best is Northern Canada, and that was on channel 38 under.
Well I found this thread and was thinking I will share my .02. I run a Super Wack Packed General Lee, 2x4 Davemade pill box, with a preditor 10K 27" whip. All from Radio active radio I am swinging about 1100-1200 watts and can smack a mud duck (people who run small radios like uniden cobra etc.)so deep in the mud it takes a back hoe to get them out. Finding the right radio for you is as personal as what type of Ford Truck you drove off the lot. You dont just walk on to a truck lot and say," oh just pull one around and I will take it." You generally know what you want when you go. (it may not be what you can afford but you know what you want.) My advise Stay out of cb shops unless they have a GREAT rep. If you are going to spend money on the net do your research find some forums read up and be carefull of referb junk. If you want to really be heard you have to pay to play.

YOU cant beat the old GE(s) I still have one the old **** dial 23 channel. I dont run it but I do test my SWR(s) with it that way I dont burn my big Radio.
I have a President HR 2600 that I use in my ride. It has the AM/FM, SSB, and CW,countless freqs, variable power and I have a 350w footwarmer and modulator when I crank her down to get out. As for the antenna, I have always been fond of Wilsons for the mobile and the Spectrum 5/8 wave w/ 20 ground plane radials for my base.
Im running a Cobra Night Watch 29 WX NW ST fully illuminated front panel. i am using a little 2 1/2 foot antena that i had laying around my house. i would like to get 2 48" whips that clamp onto your mirrors or your tool box in the back. but with that little anntena i can get out 8-10 miles on a clear day.
but if your looking for the best radio for your buck, i would go cobra. and remember.... you get what you pay for.

What do you think about Cherokee radio's? I have a 40 channel unit that I picked up a local truck stop. I have a 4 ft whip antennae that was installed and matched to my radio by a local cb shop.
