I have an old Andrew J president! It was in a truck i got in 1980 ,a 79 short bed sand box ed.! I have had it cranked to the max and man is it loud, alot of people think i'm talkin on a base station!!
Cobra used to be built by Uniden but moved their contract elsewhere (and their quality suffered for it). Uniden started building their own radios similar to the Cobras. I have a 10 year old Uniden PC66 that has been worked on a bit, with a proper antenna (which I do not have at this time) I can get 16 miles on channel 19 reliably across the city of Cincinnati. Did it when I was driving truck many times when I was coming home.
Mine will dead key 11 watts and swing 42 watts. Many folks think I have a linear.
For what it would cost to duplicate mine, though, you could have a Ranger 2950 or one of the upper end Galaxy radios.
As for shops to set yours up, check around truckstops in your area and see where the shops are. The guy who set mine up has his own shop off exit 69 on I-71 in Ohio.
For those looking for matching the antenna and cable for max efficiency, I suggest your local CB shop or truck stop. Some large truck stops ( I mean full service..truck wash, service bays, fuel and scales) will have a guy or gal there to help you tweek your radio. The procedure known as " matching" your radio to antenna will improve transmission and reception by minimizing so-called "reflections" between the radio and antenna. A poor impedance match between components will result in less power transmitted and received, all because the reflections in the system will work against the signal coming and going through the transmission lines.
Back in the old days when I used to use CB's (late 70's), you just couldn't beat a Cobra. It was also VERY easy to make a few "adjustments" which enhanced performance significantly. Including SSB, I seem to remember having about 165 channels or so after I got done giving it a "tune up"
I own a Cobra 29LTD and a Uniden (walmart version) of the same radio
To be honest tho... a cheap radio can talk as good as a poor tuned good one
Its all in the SWR's and such. Make sure you set them
