1992 302 Beef Up
Well just found this website, and have been looking threw old posts to try and find some ideas but thought i would just post up a new one and see what there was to offer...
i have a 1992 F-150 Flareside that i am trying to turn into a street truck of sorts with some guts..... i have a pretty much stock 302 in it i have a new t-5 transmission, but again, mostly gutless gears.... and re-built 8.8 locking rear end.... really want to know what ideas you would have to build this thing up.... i have found things from super chargers http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/...k.html#systems
i am looking for any ideas, idealy cheap ones.... milage isn't to large of a concern to me, but if it helps than that is nice.... i know a bit about automotive topics, but still kind of illiterate when it comes to performance talk, so if you could kind of explain what it is that you are recomending that would be good, thanks.
Drew.....

Maybe some electric fans or underdrive pullies. Since you have a standard trans. I don't think I'd get a chip, just bump the timing up to 14*btdc and run premium fuel. If you don't have a K&N get one and open up the airbox by cutting the bottom off. These mods will give you a nice increase in power.

cheap upgrades...i've got the same truck. don't bother with a chip until you get a few other mods first. for starters, underdrive pulleys..big help. they threw another 15hp my way. i'd start with the pulleys, a cold air intake (K&N makes a nice kit), hi flow exhaust (set of headers if ya can). performance plugs, wires, coil help a bit too. my next step is a bigger throttle body. there are also quite a bit of selection in camshafts and lifter kits. i haven't done this yet myself, but its on my list.

try www.performancecombos.com. i've had my best luck browsing thru manufacturer's home pages. most have a section to search by vehicle. they'll show you everything they have available.

i'm putting a explorer cam in mine. the only better speed density cam is a Crane cam made specifically for S.D. computers and it makes good torque and hp increases for 5.0 engine according to my DeskTop Dyno even with stock heads. the problem with the stock cam is the lack of duration. the lift on the explorer cam is no greater. the engine dosnt repond to mods very well because it isnt letting any fuel in.

browse the aftermarket. most of the time with camshafts, manufacturers list the expected changes, or at least show you a graph with the HP and Torque increases. check out crane cams. they've got a great selection, and far more knowledge on the subject than I. they should be able to point you in the right direction. tell them what you're looking to change...0-60? 1/4 mile time? top speed? towing? fuel economy?

what you're looking for sounds like something to improve HP within the power band (1700-4500rpm). what is the gear ratio in the rear? this will be the big deciding factor in how the HP your engine creates, is used. a smaller ratio, 2.73, 3.08 will result in a higher top speed, but the larger ratios, 3.73 and 4.10s will send you off the line flying. before building, you should decide what you're looking to build. .
