98 Exped. Ignition Coil Replacement

Just got a tuneup on a 98 Exped. V8 4.6 EFI. Mechanic suggests changing the Ignition coils but $$ was tight so I put it off 'til this weekend. Now have the $$ to pick up the parts and attempt it my self. It looks like this model has 2 coils. I am guessing I should change them both. Can anyone help give me the do's and don't of this parts change? Also Auto Zone has a Wells and Accel. Any favorites out there? Much obliged for any suggestions/direction/etc.

How does it run after the tune-up? Does it run rough or misfire or anything?

It runs better but not exactly right. Prior to the tuneup it was misfiring pretty bad, real hesitant, missing, short on power. The computer diagnosis was it was a misfire on cyl #6. Since the tuneup it feels like all cylinders are firing but it still seems like it can be a little hesitant. Hesitant is the best way I can describe it. All of this came on this week and the plug wires were changed last year. Mileage is 95k and the mechanic suggested they (coils) start to go around 100k miles. What do you think.

Thanks

The Ford Triton engines use COPs. (Coil on Plug) There is no distributor and there are no spark plug wires. See this thread for info.

Hey Matt, the 4.6 still has wires and coil packs. There are 2 coil packs... 4 cyl each. I have never heard of a weak coil on these vehicles... they either fire or they don't. Only the 5.4 uses the COP. Have you changed your fuel filter recently? Do you typically run your gas tank below 1/4? If SO I would suspect your filter is your culprit. Just keep in mind that you will need a Ford fuel filter removal tool to change. It is available for about 5$ at your local parts house. THe filter is located under the drivers side of the truck on the inside frame rail. Good luck... I hope this has helped!

ignition coils

Thanks for the insight here. The fuel filter is due a change as well. I will look into that. I don't know much about the coils and my mechanic explained to me that once they start to go they give you trouble 'til they are replace. Still not sure what the right thing to do is. Fuel Filter should be easy but wondering still if the coils may be the problem?
